@scottalanmiller I agree. Since Microsoft is still selling MSSE as the protection in their Intune product line they make sure it stays relevant or people might leave Intune.

@dominica what do you want to know? It's an antivirus when it's doing it's job and you're not surfing sites that have bad things on it it's no different than nearly any different.

I notice no additional load on my PC, but my phone - well that's another story. I put the mobile version on my Galaxy S4 and I'm noticing a considerable slowdown. I don't know if it's because the phone came with another AV on it already that I can't uninstall or disable.

Microsoft does not say MSSE is bad. They say it's a baseline that all other AV's should shoot to be better than. !=bad.

I know you don't like it @ajstringham but I do. The only reason I've moved away from it for other options (namely Webroot) is because I like the journaling feature webroot has.

Just to throw gas on the fire... you can always use this Microsoft utility to create a bootable USB stick from an ISO.

From an end user perspective I don't think 8.1 is that different than 8.0. A start button that you see instead of having to know the lower left (by default) will take you to the start screen?

Of course from an admin side the differences are much more noticeable and appreciated.

I definitely like the idea of this. No more waiting for the waiter to get to you. When you're ready to order, you simply place your order.

I suppose this also opens up the possibility that more than just a dedicate waiter/waitress can take care of a table - any wait staff could see that you have an empty glass and refill it, of course you can also press a button on the table asking for a refill.

I guess the main thing you'd be giving up is the sales pitch from the wait staff on what is good in their restaurant.

Not part of your question, but I was wondering, why are you calling this part of your bottleneck? because you only have a RAID 1? You could remove this bottle neck for around $150 with an SSD drive, assuming this is primarily for testing. If it's for production, well that's another story.

What makes Pertino secure? How is this different from Hamachi?

To specifically answer this point, Pertino is completely secure because there is no 1:N endpoint. Everything is device to device.
Example: You put Pertino on your DC and then on a sales laptop that is roaming the world. The person with the laptop has exactly the same access to the server as he has when he is in the office. Nothing more and nothing less. Pertino does not grant access to anything the user does not already have access to. Pertino is not a directory server or providing server authentication. Pertino is simply a network connection that happens to work from anywhere, it is not restricted to your office.

I'm less worried about the permissions on the server itself, I would assume that the server's permissions would be in effect. I'm wondering more about the security of the tunnel since it is supported by a third party.
Here's a great example of a system that used to be bullet proof, but is no longer the case: Skype. Pertino sounds exactly like how Skype was 4 years ago. End to end encryption with the Skype servers only acting as helpers in setting up the tunnel then dropping out. But the US Gov't started putting pressure on them to create a way for Skype to 'tapped' like traditional phones (worse actually) and now the Skype protocol is eavesdroppable.

@ajstringham I did read the rumor... but it was on the interwebs and considering that many of the main players have their own show right now I'm thinking it will never happen, at least not with the original cast.

@Dashrender Well, it's what works best for each environment.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea. I loved Himachi when it first hit the scene. I just can't justify the expense in my situation since my users never connect from anywhere but home and once the VPN clients are setup (and have been for many many years) the home computers can access everything inside my network and I haven't paid a penny more than the original purchase that included I think up to 20 or so VPN client terminations. Even when I moved to Sonicwall a few years ago, the VPN clients came with that too.

The best sales pitch I can here for this product is, "does your current VPN solution require a significant amount of tech support? Client endpoints not connecting? VPNs dropping? etc? Then try this product" and I do fully believe that you'll get sales and more than likely end up with a much lower incident rate and happier end users, but if you don't have that high incident rate now... the extra spend seems odd.

    • RE: Do You Push Your E-mail?

Who knows I might be using IMAP and not even realize it since most phones today will auto configure based on your email address ( I did notice that cox started doing that about 2 years ago).

The single point of failure has never been an issue for me since (on my phone) I only set to copy messages and delete from server when i delete from my phone (which is how I wanted it).

I guess I've been kinda getting the setup the OP wanted since I started using email on my phone to begin with.

Actually, think about it. Let's say it's $4/device. I think that's about as high as they go but @josh could give you more info. That's $40/month or $480/year. Over the course of, say, 5 years, it adds up to $2400. Wow.

Flip side: You have a Cisco ASA or Juniper or Fortinet or whatever at each end. Take the cost of an appliance and multiply by 2. Say it's $800. That's $1600. Now add in licensing for each device that gets expensive every time you grow. Now add in the hours of time it takes to get the two ends configured and tested and working. Now add in troubleshooting client issues. Or is it the firewall? Is it at site A or B? Crap, they changed something so now I need to upgrade my appliances and get new licensing...Finally, what happens when you get a surge that fries one of the firewalls. Start all over.

Pertino eliminates the time, high level of expertise required, maintenance of hardware and licensing and keeps it at an easy to manage price and in a nice web interface you can access anywhere.

I think I can say that I've spent less than the $800 (the left over from your example) in support costs on the above stated setup in the initial setup and ongoing support over 10 years. Could those things you mention happen, sure - but they are much more likely in a client to core network setup than a Point to Point setup. When I have troubles with my Point to Point setup it's always been either the ISP is having a problem, or the firewall appliance freaked (in which case a reboot resolved every time except for a fried unit). In the case of the fried unit, I simply received the unit - restored my backed up config (one of the things I love about Cisco's text configs) and I was going in less than 10 of receiving the replacement.

OH, and you can't count the firewall appliances in my case either because I'd have to have it no matter what to protect my endpoints from the internet, and in my case, the P2P VPN was included. At this scale most appliances seem to cover up to 50 users without any additional licensing.

A lot of times they don't publicize it or even tell you the truth when asked. But it looks like it's there.

Cool thanks - in the end I still cool with my current setup. I wait for my email until I check it manually (at least for personal email)
