@art_of_shred said in Would You Hire Someone in IT Who Does Not Have a Home Lab:

It's kinda simple. You're building a team. Do you pick people looking for a paycheck, or people with a passion about what you're doing? If you have the option, you're looking for passion... or you shouldn't be the one doing the hiring.

once again passion shouldn't be determined on if they do stuff outside of working hours. I work to get a paycheck yes, but I also show passion for my job while doing so.

Not good enough when there is a huge line of people behind you who show not only passion while at work, but also while at home. You're hamstringing yourself and saying it's not fair that they choose to be passionate always, and you only some of the time.

it's your choice - it's not a wrong choice, it's simply a choice.. and as such, your life will go different directions.

Bring this to Scott's constant talks about college. The person who goes into hotel staff our of HS, versus the one who goes to college. The non college guy will be light years ahead learning wise in the real world.

Sadly, so many uppers today will hold the non college people down because they (the uppers) think that college is some kind of right of passage - but that's becoming less and less the case these days.

    • Microsoft Signature Edition

So what do you guys think about this?

For those who don't know, Signature Edition is where MS sells a device with Windows installed and no crapware. Just Windows. They also talk about optimizations, etc they have done to make the system even faster.

Paul Thurrott was talking on Windows Weekly the other day that he believes (and I tend to agree) that many people have bad experiences with Windows because of all of the crap ware that manufactures spew all over their machines. Windows itself is fine, but since the vendor is trying to scratch out ever last cent from a sale they include all this garbage for extra revenue.

Do you agree that Windows would be a better platform if not for this preinstalled junk? And even if the platform itself wouldn't be better, would the general user experience be better?

I'd be willing to bet that the majority of IT shops like @guyinpv are VARs. Can they do consulting? of course they can. But in reality most SMBs don't want to pay for it... they call you up and say I want X, so you sell them X.

Also, don't be afraid to challenge Scott.

Change that to be afraid NOT to challenge Scott. Although far less as an intern than a staffer, but the sentiment is important. We are an idea company, not a hierarchy. I get emergency technical veto power when pushes comes to shove, but if I'm arguing with you, that means I'm not in a position to put the brakes on - keep arguing. If you have a good point, it should be defensible.

This is one of the things I've definitely noticed and appreciated about you. While others might see you as beating a dead horse, if you're still talking it's because it's clear that either your points aren't understood, or the other person is making points that might be changing your position.

Please PLEASE PLEASE do NOT buy those A series AMD laptops - that processor is such a piece of SHIT and it 100x slower than a 8 year old i5 processor. Seriously - I know, I ordered 6 of them before knowing they were shit, and sadly, couldn't return them...

    • Damn Stamps.com

I'm sure somewhere in the small print they told me I was required to sign up for a monthly service fee just to purchase one stamp one time.. but that's crap. I looked into it, signed up in January, decided not to purchase and am now checking my CC statement and see they are billing me a reoccuring fee.
Now trying to see how to cancel the service, and I'm required to call an 800 number.. this smells just like AOL and how impossible they make it to cancel an account.

I've used CDW in the past.

My current VAR is PCM - they could sell you the licenses as well.

In either case though - YOU need to research exactly what SKU you need - because frequently they will try to sell you the wrong stuff.

We had to replace power strips a few years ago because the auditors as of that year only accepted strips with some new code stamped on them, but where otherwise identical to the ones we already had.

@itivan80 said in Apple plans to scan your images for child porn:

This is something law enforcement should be doing with a court ordered warrant not apple. Talk about big tech super reach. I get it they want to stop it before it happens but they are not the police.

I agree. And also why not scan for every other type of potential crime? Drug trafficking, terrorism, murder, war crimes etc.

Maybe apple should record all your conversations with the built-in mic in your device to keep track of what you're saying - without you knowing and without a warrant of course. Oh, I forgot, they were already caught doing that with Siri two years ago.

      This is Scott's entire point...

And this child porn is literally just the foot in the door - tomorrow they WILL be searching for those things because warrants will make them.

My voicemail was lost in because their VM system suffered the same problem as their customers.

There are huge numbers of people waiting tables hoping that they can beat minimum wage out there. Tons.

Now this I totally believe. The wait staff at a Denny's definitely doesn't do very well. If you want to rake in the cash, work at a place where the average plate is closer to $30 or more.

    • Add Fax support to FreePBX

OK Since I'm building this on C@C I don't use a FreePBX distro therefore I have to do a lot of work on my own.

Well to get faxing to work apparently I need something called spanDSP. Also need libtiff, but that appears to already be installed (version 3.9.4).

I found these instructions, but they don't tell me where to download the install files from.

Though, after years and years I did finally get to have gigantic Alaskan king crab legs again - Holy hell they have gotten massively expensive! But damn they were good.

    • RE: Need to rename a Domain Controller

      Without reading that -

Demote the DC to standard server - reboot
leave the domain (set a local admin password you know) - reboot
change the server name - reboot.
      rejoin the domain - reboot
      promote to DC - reboot
      done

I'll add that you should make sure you move any FSMO roles to another server first, but the demotion should handle that for you if needed.

also, if you are running DHCP/DNS on this server, you might migrate those first so you don't suffer downtime.

Well I could either be a savior there or it would be terrible. I can't tell yet.

A case of walking on water or swimming like a rock?

Moreso save them or be pigeonholed and not able to help them. They use virtualbox for their Virtualization. All windows servers are physical and they are running virtualbox on those.

The guy told me that Xen/XenServer and KVM were not good (I really don't think he's ever even heard of them but only said that when I mentioned them), and they don't have enough money to use them..........

He told me he's used Linux since 0.99 (I think it was a joke? But with him I'm not sure) and he kept saying he wants to use pfsebse for everything, but currently they're using off the shelf netgear stuff....

huh - what would your position be? If you're under the guy who told you that - I think I'd have to run away. I suppose you could have a frank conversation with him. "Listen, I really like what I see in your company, but man, your IT stuff really is just not up to current standards. In order for me to take this position I'd have to have budgetary control of IT and autonomy." Without something like that is sounds like this guy would just run you into the ground.

      Good luck.

    • RE: Are You Making Your Family Technologically Illiterate?

What's sad is that they don't really need to care - instead they just need to realize they can make their own lives better by learning a few of the things we try to teach them so they aren't just sitting around waiting for something to be fixed. It's not like we are a bunch of union workers and are going to fine them for taking our work away.
