@MattSpeller I think Dodge used a similar idea for their Dodge Durangos back around 2004 or 2005... I hope it works out good for what this guy is doing though!

I'm sure that was the case... a decade ago? I've only been playing with Linux for about that amount of time and remember the... words... for people who didn't compile themselves. Haven't seen that attitude in a very long time though.

Aye. You are right. That time has, fortunately for us, passed by, for most things. I like to compile things to get the bleeding edge version some times (Suricata, Gambas, etc), but there's no real need for an IT pro to custom compile a whole Linux OS anymore... Thank $diety!

Apparently linux can't be used in the enterprise. http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/939225-excuses-for-not-using-linux-invalid?page=7#entry-4607191

I was reading that yesterday. The comment about having to compile everything was lol worthy.

It used to be (almost) necessary, especially if you wanted to improve performance. A custom compiled Kernel with a few config tweaks would dance circles around stock at times... That isn't so much the case any more, fortunately!

Or you can build it in PHP. Whoever said PHP isn't versatile really hasn't taken a deep dive into it. You can even write full GUI applications (for Windows only, AFAIK) with it...(granted, I've played with it, and it ain't fun...)

      How is that not versatile?

Granted PHP may not always be the BEST language to program something in... but it can definitely be done.

Yeah... I'm feeling bad for one of my fellow IT Geeks... His exchange server suddenly started re-delivering emails that were around 1 month old that had already been delivered... Glad I don't work there!

I'm on my way to Verizon in about 15 minutes, lol.

I've really enjoyed Android. However, if I have a device that will allow me to run apps from multiple platforms... I would probbaly try that out. If it is that bad... then I could always switch back to Android later.

You weren't missing much. We have full on BEZ and everything in it's time.

I think they will switch over to using android at somepoint if they stay around.

Ha ha ha. Yeah. I knew like one person who had a BlackBerry and he used it heavily . I don't know if he had the Enterprise stuff with it or not, but it very rarely gave him any problems... but yeah, as you ay: everything in its time.

I'd be interested in hearing from somebody that actually switched from Android to Windows Phone and what they like / don't like about Windows Phone (8.1 or 10).

    • RE: Rumors about Windows Compatibility, Are they true?

This will be umm.. interesting... I've been thinking about upgrading my phone since it is more of a PDA than phone (I generally don't have signal anywhere I go... despite the fact that I live in an area that supposedly has "excellent 4g coverage" according to Verizon's map...

I have been on the fence about getting a Windows Phone that I can drop the Win10 preview on... just to see if it is worth it. I have spent time with all of the major mobile platforms, except for Blackberry (which I see as irrelevant now) and Windows Phone (I had Windows Mobile / Windows CE a long, long time ago, but that hardly counts).

@thecreativeone91 -- As I understand it, in order for the attacker to be able to execute this, they actually have to be connected to your wireless device or you have to have the web interface available to the interwebz. Am I right in this thinking?

Nope, the vulnerability is in the chipset itself. If you can get traffic too the unit even without being authenticated on wireless or even to the device at all, you can do remote script execution. Not the first time this has happened either. Even worse is some of these devices will have upnp enabled even on the WAN.

So any traffic? Even a specially crafted packet sent to my router on port 80 from the WAN could trigger this vulnerability -- even if I have remote management turned off?

Hmm.... Time to go see if my router is on that list.

@scottalanmiller Just hold out a sign that reads "Need Ride to Spiceworld" and see if you can catch a lift... I'm sure somebody would recognize you.

Of course, there's always the chance that's illegal in the UK and you could also get escorted to the nearest paddy wagon.

@IRJ IIRC, the Veeam Endpoint will allow you to back up to a network share, and it does work as a scheduled backup.

I'm not sure if it should be used in "production" environments or not, but I've got the Veeam Endpoint Backup running on my office machine for testing. It seems to work rather nicely. (Office machine is Server 2012R2).
