      @creayt That'd be a nice machine regardless

Mostly while I become legit w/ system building and overclocking I want a large-screen laptop that can drive 3 screens at 60Hz, so that one seemed excellent for the price ( $1699 ). But it just seems self-indulgent to pick up a semi-cutting-edge-ish laptop like that when the new proc generation is less than 2 months away. Especially if they reduce heat substantially, this is a thin 17" workstation that probably gets pretty hot, so probably worth the wait twice over. It's running an GTX 970M 3GB I think, which w/ the quad core proc in that thin of a shell probably gets pretty steamy.

Ok, who dares me to install 2012 on OBR ZERO just to run some Crystal and see what she can do?

    • RE: Best Dell Models For Performance - Optiplex or XPS?

If you rely on Dell for support and longer warranty options, go Optiplex. If not and you're looking for the highest performance to price ratio, go XPS. All in all there are a lot of similarities and the only palpable differences you'll hit are:

XPS visual designs can be a little bit more flamboyant
XPS motherboard and PSU combos are more likely to support high-end graphics cards and other extensibility options

If you want the equivalent of performance of some of the XPS options you'll see at a much lower price point you'll need to step up to Dell Precision workstations, which are pretty pricey.

      My $0.02

For what it's worth, I've had a few XPSs myself in the past, 2 laptops and a desktop, and I thought they were all great. I'm sure the desktop isn't comparable to what you can do on the same budget if you build yourself, but Dell has insane promotions and 40% off coupons on their refurbs, which use a dynamic pricing model so you can get ridiculous prices sometimes if you keep an eye out and act fast ( people gobble them up when the sale starts ).

My mom actually still uses my old M1330 with the lid closed plugged into a high-def t.v. as her daily driver what feels like a decade later. The battery gave out eventually, but was replaceable for $29, the only maintenance it's needed.

Disclaimer: I've also had 2 Optiplexes and thought they were great as well 🙂

I searched through it's data sheet, I see a few related things. I think it's to do with the H700 1GB supporting SSD cache??

      http://i.dell.com/sites/content/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/dell-poweredge-r620-technical-guide.pdf

      "Storage controllers
Dell provides highly capable RAID options for you to ensure that your data remains safe. Dell’s RAID
controller options offer impressive performance improvements, including the following features:
ï‚· FastPathâ„¢ I/O: This feature can help accelerate performance when operating on SSDs. "

Interesting. I know this server has a technology called CacheCade which is where you run mostly HDDS and then throw a single SSD into the mix up to 512GB which it can use as a cache similar to how hybrids/FusionDrives work. Thanks for the info.

    • Licensing question re: 2012 R2 Essentials and IIS

2012 Essentials seems to use CAL, which from my limited understanding is related to how many users/devices can be using businessy services off of the same server. Does that directly apply to IIS? IIS comes pre-installed on 2012 Essentials from what I read and I'm trying to figure out whether I need Standard or can save hundreds of $ and get an Essentials license for my home server to run a private beta of my new web app off of a T110 in my closet. Could not find this via Google, does anyone know for sure?

@creayt at least account for the rest of it lol - add the cost of the RAID controller to the 10 and RAM to the single

I'm not sure that helps hahaha. The server was a Dell refub and I think w/ a 40% off coupon still chimed in at about $7k pre-SSDs, so $12k versus about $1250 for the t110 SSD included. But, the Raid one is in a datacenter and has two octacores w/ 256GB of RAM and can probably handle exponentially more users, so I'll keep telling myself that 🙂

And as you can see because of the silly way that Mac OSX identifies running windows, I can't keep track of my own identity today.

But I admire that you can get work done on OS X at all. To me it feels like dropping back into a Pentium 4.

Definitely will. I'm super excited about it. The biggest drawback it has is that 16GB is its max, and I'm used to 32 on my current workstation.

@creayt I keep hearing this claim from several people, but I just haven't seen it.

No, I totally get it, and a lot of people have shared your experience. Sometimes I wish I was one of them. Having owned every single Mac model in the last 5 years or so with the exception of most mac minis and the newest Mac Pro ( though I have used a handful of the minis ) and the newest MacBooks w/ the single USB, and having experienced it on and each and every single one of them, I feel pretty expert in commenting on the subject. It's very perceptual and personal. The types and instances of latency in OS X ( which can be very random, sometimes the exact same task w/ an identical load will create a delay, stutter, or hesitation that 7/8 other times it won't, it's almost like OS X is sending analytics on everything you do up to its servers sneakily in the background and the IO somehow cock blocks the entire machine unpredictably intermittently ).

Don't get me wrong, there are a good handful of things I like and even prefer about OS X to Windows, the interesting and artsy-looking text aliasing, the interesting and useful add-on projects that help bandaid its glaring usability holes and add new features ( I can't use a mac for more than an hour or so without installing Zooom 2 and Jitouch ), the ability to quit programs mid-Command+Tab, the idea of attempting to make an operating system beautiful ( even if they fail as often as succeed ). I just don't think it's subjective to say that OS X as an operating system is very slow compared to Windows in most important ways to a user like myself at least. Independent of how a system performs when pledged into rich benchmarking for specific usage patterns, encountering random, frequent, consistent latency in your overall experience w/ an OS is much more important than say a rendering finishing a few minutes slower. The point is that the more your OS instantly reacts to your actions the more quickly you can use it. If you're having to mentally monitor the interface as you interact with it and switch files/contexts/tasks/apps/workspaces, and conscientiously slow yourself down waiting for the system to be ready for you, it becomes not only very palpably counter-productive, but frustrating. I notice the latency even in little things like how long it takes after depressing the keys until the app switcher comes up ( Command + tab ). To most people I've talked to it feels instant, but as someone w/ terribly responsive ADD and perfect eyesight and who consumes energy drinks regularly, the delay is there. And it's gone when you install Windows in Boot Camp.

Anyway, I always say that it'd be incredible if Apple focused on and mastered performance engineering the way Microsoft has, but I won't hold my breath because Apple is run w/ more of a business and profitability focus, so as long as the experiences their very limited set of options provide are good enough ( and furthermore, they don't want things to be too fast as a rule because then if so they can't tell you the new thing is 200% faster in 6 months and sell you on a replacement ), they're fine with it. Microsoft, on the other hand, attempts to get their software to run as closely to instant on all hardware as a rule, which is why the OS performs noticeably faster and more responsively on any mac than OS X does.

    • Software Raid for the OS?

Is there a way to install Windows onto a software RAID? Is this just impossible?

Ordered a new laptop which has 3 mSata slots and I'd love to run a Raid 0 of mSata SSDs as the only storage. Wondering if there's a way to do it.

My favorite by far is the new Antec S10 ( $450 after rebate )
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129224

It's extremely attractive, and can handle quad SLI.

Second favorite is the In Win 904 ( $230 )
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811108456

Saw a guy use internal lighting and custom sheathing to make this thing look like a work of future art. Trying to find the link now.

Yeah, I'd be double checking that the CPU cooler is mounted correctly.

Was the cooler the stock cooler that came part n parcel or sloppy seconds from the previous CPU?

It's an MSI Stealth Pro ( 17" gaming laptop ) that arrived from BestBuy yesterday.

Buying from best buy is a mistake, many of the models if it the same models as sold else where are customized too make cheaper for best buy. Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo and many others are doing this for them.

That would depend on whether you know what you're doing or not, wouldn't it. The reason to buy an identical model from Best Buy is for compounding discounts. I got the newest, identical MSI Stealth Pro ( the only model w/ the 5th gen i7 ) and was able to use:

      A 10% off coupon
      A 5% off promotional rebate
Elite status certificates to reduce the cost
And got about $40 in new certificates directly from this purchase.

All in all it was hundreds of dollars less than any other buying option, had free expedited shipping, and NO RESTOCKING FEE if I decide to return it ( compared to big ones from NewEgg and other resellers ), a mistake would've been not to order this laptop through Best Buy.

    • System Builder Newb Question

Beyond individual feature support ( say a board only supporting PCIe 2 instead of 3, or Sata II instead of III ), does your motherboard choice directly affect performance in any way?

In other words, when choosing between 2 boards that are both the correct socket type for your CPU, does anything matter beyond whether it has the features you're looking for?

Doing a CPU and RAM transplant for a temporary workstation and have very few needs, just want one PCIe 16 slot and 32GB RAM support on my socket and I'm set, and wondering whether it's worth going w/ a slightly more expensive board than ones that have the features I need or if it's basically a boolean decision, has the features I need, check, then pick the lowest price without reviews indicating a strong likelihood of reliability woe.

Picked up a semi-cheap ASUS gaming laptop that has a lower-end graphics card and amazingly, it can do the 3 1440p screens at 60 Hz out of the box w/ 2 cables and THE BUILT IN screen as well. I'm going to go 3 portrait and the laptop landscape on a stand. Pretty amazed at what this $1250 eyesore can do.
