I know that a lot of people put their whole purpose in live is to pass long their genes, but I don't buy that, not as the dominate species on this planet. We no longer need to work that way.

You can use your life for whatever you want. What makes playing video games and learning below having progeny? Other people's opinions that what - and really I just stopped listening. People used to give me a hard time about not having/wanting kids. It's just not my mission in life, nor does it need to be.

I'm with you--we can do whatever we want in this life since there are 7+ billion of us . I'm a wholly selfish person, and I constantly flip-flop on whether I want kids of my own. I love my niece and the majority of kids I come in contact with, but at the end of the day I enjoy the endless freedom I have.

I think at this point, if anything, I'd like to adopt. I was born with a congenital heart defect that I'd rather not risk passing on, plus there are numerous children in the US and the world that need love and a good home.

Samantha and I have been having a great time talking with everyone that has stopped by. While we may not have something specific to show off at our table, it's been great to hear about everyone's experiences with different data center providers and seeing what you guys look for in a provider.

Plus, Please-Don't-Sue-Us-Jenga is a nice way to break up the sessions for people so we're happy to provide a reprieve.

    • RE: Moving education services to the cloud

@scottalanmiller said in Moving education services to the cloud:

Just to run some quick numbers for you. A Scale HC3 cluster starts around $25K. That's a three node cluster with a ton of memory, IOPS and full HA (at the platform level.) You can run something like 128 Linux VMs or 64 Windows VMs on that (give or take rather a bit.)

To do the same on Vultr (figure 64 2GB Windows nodes) you would pay $2,304/mo without HA. If you wanted failover you would need to double that.

With Scale HC3 you would need three Windows Datacenter licenses plus the $25K base hardware. Let's call that $46K total.

Let's say that you run this workload for four years. Vultr would be $110,592.

If we subtract the capex of the Scale HC3 plus the Windows licensing from that we have $1,345/mo to spend on our colocation. We only need a 6U colocation space for this setup. Figure 8U to be safe. Our colocation cost will be far less than that, @ChrisL could give you a ballpark on that.

If you get bigger than the stated Scale HC3 size, the cost of colocation plummets quickly per workload. If you needed four nodes or five nodes you outpace cloud by crazy margins.

And the cloud cost assumes no HA, no backups. If you want either of those, the numbers climb quickly. But HA is already built into the colocation option in my example and backups are cheap to add (relatively speaking.)

Our basic 10U option starts at $399/month. An extra 2U for whatever other goodies one might want to throw in. 🙂

      ATTENTION!

We're giving away two (2) t-shirts. Here's how to win:

There are eleven (11) Coly's hidden throughout the convention hallway (from the registration table to the end of the hallway).

Find a Coly, and bring it to us at our table. We'll write your name on it and you'll be entered into the drawing.

One entry per person. Good luck and happy hunting.

      Chipotle for lunch.

But my dinner this past week was fresh caught wild Alaskan salmon. My GF's dad goes up with his son once a year and they catch a whole mess of salmon and package it up to bring back. So good.

Watching another episode of the remake of Carl Sagans "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage" with Neil deGrasse Tyson on Netflix.

I think it's pretty good. Don't expect to learn lots of new things if you are already interessted in such topics as (astro)physics, evolution theory etc, but it's a good round-up and probably awesome for people who don't have any idea.

As someone who had never seen the original, I think the updated version was insanely well-made and very accessible to students and young people. A few of the middle episodes dragged, but other than that, I think NdGT was very charismatic and was the perfect person to have at the helm for this.

    • RE: Choosing a colo

      Hey Kris,

As @scottalanmiller said, we currently sponsor the NTG Lab in our new downtown LA DC and as he and the rest of the team can attest, speeds are very quick from East Coast to the facility. We have a ton of options from 1U to Full racks, all with customizable options with OS, storage, RAM, etc.

Also we have coupons! You can use the MangoLassi exclusive coupon MangoCon50 to get 50% off your first month so that's cool too.

If you need more info, you can check out our options at www.colocationamerica.com/colocation or just reach out to me here. 🙂

    • Data centers and retrofitting

With the cost to build a new facility being extremely high, a lot of providers are taking to retrofitting existing buildings to handle a data center. It's a good plan too, considering that there are a ton of abandoned buildings, factories, retail spaces and more that already have infrastructure in place, and would only need minor upgrades to get them ready for a DC and its hardware.

Would you like to see more existing infrastructure used or do the needs of today's hardware lean towards building a new facility from the ground up?
