You uploaded a file that was .6 MB

How is it going, I didn't even know you had a thread on this and I told you the same thing about PST 😛

It ended up taking about 70 minutes, but it completed. Now I have to look at the file and compare folders and see if everything copied over, especially since the PST file sizes were reported as different.

    • RE: Viability of Samsung EVO 850 SSD on Dell PERC H710P

I would venture a guess that they feel (as many do) that you need enterprise quality SSDs in a server application.

There was a lot of back and forth over the Internets about this. A lot of people run consumer stuff, but a lot of people yell at them, too!

With the price point of the Edge SSDs that xByte sells, I decided to go that route. It's about 100% more, but considering the cost of consumer stuff that's not terrible.

    • RE: Storage Question

Well, we're a smaller company, so we could probably be down for a day or so.

We also have pretty good backups.

Not sure about the disk speed requirement, to be honest. Always just assumed go big! 🙂

Oh and thanks for the welcome. I hope it was a good first post, ha ha!

    • Backup System For 5 PC SMB

I have a friend who has a business with 5 PCs they want to back up. For various reasons, they do not want a server. They need all 5 PCs running separatelty, and want backups. They also need to be able to retain versions of the files for 7 years.

I was wondering what products you guys use for scenarios like this.

I was thinking about something like Acronis with the cloud option, but figured I would come here and see what options are out there.

I'd like a local and cloud based copy of the files. I would also like to be able to spin up the backup in a VM.

I use Datto and Shadowprotect, but I'm not sure they are good fits here because of the cost of the cloud retention. I suppose I could manually dump a backup to USB every month, but I'd like something more elegant if possible.

So, as always, I am ready and willing for comments and advice!

Yeah, people laugh at me when I say that I hate computers. Not sure why, I genuinely do hate the f-ing things...

The thing that I find more of is that people just refuse to believe the advice of "just try rebooting it" ... then when that fixes it, they get pissed and say "boy I wish I went to school for 4 years for that".

What do you consider someone who sets up the server, and then install a hypervisor on it, VMs on that hypervisor, and then VMs, and maintains those VMs?

Oh, and also replaces a drive on the server if it goes wonky?

From the description, bench. You've not mentioned a business anywhere. If you are assuming that this role will do all of this while making business decisions as to the setup, need, etc. then it becomes IT. But there are loads of people doing this role via scripts and no business insight or knowledge at server vendors that are clearly bench.

If your description of a job is all tech and zero business, that's bench. But I think you are not describing it well.

Yeah, let's say this person is a one person employee at a company, and they are responsible for choosing the hardware, software, and everything else involved.

You're a bench it. We'll just splinch the two and put IT in the middle replacing the "en".

I see what you did there.
