I've been thinking of installing some security cameras around my house. Not that we live in a terrible neighborhood (though we are right across the water from lovely Trenton, NJ) but it's amazing all the stuff you can catch on a camera. Our local police department actually has a registry of people with security cameras and will pull their footage if there is a crime in the area.

Anyway, I am suuuuuuuuuuuuure some folks here have such a system, or are familiar.

Not looking to break the bank. Just something simple, east to install, and moderately priced.

You have backups don't you? shouldn't be an issue.

No need for backups. No data is stored on the phone anymore.

I've caved to the @scottalanmiller method of data storage.

Dont go head on with Linux no gui approach if your fresh.

Why? The GUI is just a distraction and more to learn without benefit. I highly recommend avoiding the GUI so that you study what you need rather than accidentally spending time studying tools that don't exist on servers and missing steps in getting from A to B.

As much as I argued against this at the beginning of my journey, I now agree with it.

If you really want to learn Linux, do not use a GUI.

If you are using a GUI, you might as well be using anything.

    • Cyclical Storage Logic (Personal Data)

I know it seems like I am continually beating a dead horse here, but I am really just trying to understand the thinking on ML.

So, I've decide to go to the dark side, and store all my stuff in the cloud.

That makes me nervous. What if my account gets hacked? What if somehow MS, Apple, or Google crash and lose my stuff? Etc., etc., etc..

I have an iPhone and an iPad, and a Mac. (And a PC.) Anyway, I thought ... hey let's just use iCloud and store everything there. That is a good start. No need for backups of my device on my computer anymore,. and all my photos/etc will be online and protected.

Well, in their very own documentation, Apple says:
      Do I need a Backup?
iCloud Photo Library stores all of your original photos and videos in iCloud, but we always recommend you keep back up copies of your Library. You can download your photos and videos from iCloud to your computer and store them as a separate library, transfer them to your computer with iTunes, or store them on a separate drive.

So if my point is protecting data (as opposed to ease of access), how does this help me?

Same with iCloud backups of the device. I have had issues where something did not work, and the iPhone did a fresh backup once changes were made, thus wiping out the good backup. When I work with an Apple device, I always make a backup of the Apple backup folder. Because it's happened to me many times.

Again, not trying to argumentative. Just trying to fully under the logic.

@BRRABill unless you want to shut that one server down remotely 🙂 Which can come in handy when the power goes out, your A/C isn't running and your server starts to overheat while running on battery. (FEAR MONGERING!!!)

Of course the FiOS would also be down, and thus I'd have no way to reach out to that UPS anyway.

I like to think it's something in the nature of sysadmins and technical folk. A combination of the ability to change, invent and fix things combined with altruism and the desire to see the world as a better place. When I first was on Usenet in 1989, the whole of the Internet was made up of such people and it was quite a wonderful place. That's why I love hanging out on here and Spiceworks.

This is a nice group of people, too.

There are a lot of forums fills with nasty morons. I leave those quick. 🙂

    • RE: When is SSD a MUST HAVE for server? thoughts? Discussion :D

I used the EDGE SSDs from xByte in my latest server. That would help with your cost issue.

My thinking was, yeah, it's overkill, but it wasn't much more, and it'll make the system speedier longer.

Of course, had I been buying 1000 of these instead of 1, I would have thought differently, probably.

    • You Never Know

This is kind of off-topic, but also could be filed under the category of "you never know and should always take security seriously" as well.

This is my local mall, and I have actually been to this kiosk to ask about pricing for iPad screen repair. I sent a co-worker there once but his prices were too high for the job she needed. Guess he needed extra money to fund ISIS.

    • RE: Apple is fighting the FBI

Kind of what you guys were discussing yesterday, that Apple realizes they are the weak point here, and want to fix that.

"Apple increases the security measures within iOS with every major software release, but yesterday news broke that the company is working to remove the current passcode-free recovery option from future iPhones, while it wants to begin encrypting iPhone backups on iCloud.

Why make these moves? The company has been ordered to create software to allow the FBI to access data stored on the iPhone but — were these new changes implemented — it would be unable to do that. In effect, the company has identified itself as a potential weak point in the security process because the FBI can compel it to provide data, thus, removing its ability to do that, mitigates that risk. Or at least it forces the FBI to find new ways to get inside devices."

    • BRRABill's Field Report With XenServer

Since I'm fairly new to the hypervisor game, I told @scottalanmiller I would give XenServer a shot before deciding on Hyper-V.

I thought it would be interesting to document this on the forum.

To start out, it was suggested that I download XenServer and install it. It's that easy, I was told, couple of clicks and a password. Of course, it wasn't that easy, and I already messed up a setting, and have to reinstall. Now, this is the kind of thing that makes me nervous.

But anyway, I did not check the "thin provision" box, so @scottalanmiller suggested a re-install. He can pipe in on why that option is there at install.
