2 line appearances would be more than sufficient but may be overkill.

The company owner wanted to do analog-over-SIP from the ISP to save $ but they would not have had ANY features, not even CID. Anything is a huge upgrade from what they are used to.

    • Yealink phones

One of my clients has been using a WISP for a while now for their business. The service was not good enough to be able to use VOIP. They are now in the process of getting a dedicated fiber internet service for their business. They are paying approx $380 USD for POTS and want to migrate to SIP for obvious reasons. It will be beneficial as they have 1 main office with 7 employees and 2 satellite offices.

They have never had a "real" phone system. The only "feature" they have is CID. No voicemail, nothing. They are currently using RCA 4-line desk phones. I want to get them on FreePBX and some Yealink phones. The ISP is trying to talk them into using their hosted VOIP service but the prices are inflated and you have to lease the phones.

I have only used Yealink DECT cordless phones and would like some recommendations for some basic models. I recall random posts here about some that are best to avoid and some that are great. I would rather have recommendations than buy something based off of reviews on websites like Amazon. I have used/installed Cisco, Grandstream, Polycom, Avaya, and Sangoma, etc. but wish to move to Yealink as they seem like a popular choice lately, and not just on ML.

Question: does it make sense to segment certain traffic because of security concerns? I'm thinking of the blanket statements (never backed up with fact, by the way) I've seen to segment "IoT" devices in the home because of lack of security (E.G they get hacked and said hacker now has access to your entire network).

Well in my readings, they say either method will increase security, as traffic is not supposed to travel between vlans for example. However, as I've learned today, not everything you read in cert books is accurate. So definitely get a few opinions with details.

They don't, unless those VLANs go into a ROUTER! LOL

What about routing VLAN traffic on an L3 switch? Does that then classify as a "router"?

Yep. Next time I go there I am going to get the model number and specs.

@Grey I looked yesterday and I'm using SMB instead of NFS between my NAS and Plex. I need to change it.

@jmoore I verified that. Still didn't believe it so I opened it up and double verified with the physical disk. It had a 32gb chip soldered to the board. Can't even upgrade it.

Since @scottalanmiller mentions Chromebooks a lot - A friend bought 2 Dell laptops with Win 10 and called me because she couldn't install anything on them. The disk was "full" and no free space. They were "refurbished" as I later found out. I think someone imaged with with W 10 instead of ChromeOS. They have been sitting on a shelf for about a year.

      Multiple subnets in your home?

I have 3 subnets at home. Main, IoT, and guest.
I need to upgrade to the ER4. My ERLite has been great so far though. My ISP connection is 120/5.

@brandon220 said in NAS for Plex use... Again:

@Pete-S I turned off the R410s and 510 last year. I'm currently running a newer "entry-level" server as my VM host. It has a low-end Xeon and maxes out at 32G of RAM. I have been shopping around for a while for a more robust host but can't decide on anything.

The ReadyNAS units were free and new from a relative's business that shut down. They are EOL now and slower than I would like. I plan on a similar setup to what I have now - Plex as a VM and the new storage server as a VM with an NFS share for Plex. I don't believe I will need hardware transcoding for Plex.

Why can't you just put some drives in your VM host and use that as storage? Or do you want a host with more RAM / cores as well?

I probably have enough CPU cores and my host is maxed out at 32G ram. I do have 4 spare drive bays. I probably should do some tests and see if it could work.

    • RE: NAS for Plex use... Again

I prefer to host at home due to cost and bandwidth. The closest colo is about an hour away. I can run a pretty good amount of equipment at home for the cost of a colo. Yes, I don't have redundant ISP, generators, a/c, etc, but I get a better ROI on my equipment. I have dedicated circuits to my rack. Redundant UPSs, and a room that is unoccupied. I don't share my Plex with users outside my home. I don't see the need to stream my own media over the internet when I can do it locally. Power is cheap enough too.

@EddieJennings I've stuck with Fedora for a while now. I'm too lazy to "distro hop" and had some strange issues with Ubuntu on some of my HP machines. Haven't tried any other distro in a couple years. Definitely not Pop_OS. Apparently Arch is pretty popular now but I still won't switch any time soon.

@JaredBusch I agree. People will see my screens on various systems and ask me "where all my programs are". I don't see how some people can fill an entire desktop with icons.

Gnome tweaks yes, desktop shortcuts definitely not.

I have refrained from using shortcuts on the desktop but it still takes some getting used to. I am assuming that is one "advantage" of using Cinnamon.

I need to replace my laptop (W 10) and want to go straight to linux. The only real need I have for Windows is my cable certification software and Hyper-V management. I plan on running W 10 as a vm when I need it.

@jmoore I have 1 AC-Lite in the house and 1 AC-Lite in my shop. Works great. I also segregated my SSIDs for the normal network and for ioT stuff. It is fairly easy to create VLANs on the edgerouter and firewall rules.
