Music and pretty much anything in the shop. It is a bonus as you HAVE to have music playing while you work.

I recently tried Fedora 27 Beta (Gnome 3.26) Live-boot on my ASUS ROG laptop at home... it booted up and ran just fine. It got stuck shutting down, and I didn't get a chance to see how the video was handled (for games).

I will try it out more later.
I had shut-down issues with Mint on the HP Envy 700??? It would reboot instead of shut down.

@tim_g I will probably try Fedora this weekend as there were some issues on the HP machine it was running it on with Ubuntu and Mint such as audio output and shutdown.

@tim_g I thought about it but have never used one so I was hesitant to purchase even though they are "cheap".

I would love to do daily driver stuff on Linux but every time I read on ML, I want to try a different OS. Seems as if there is a new favorite flavor every week....like Korora was for a while.

Ubuntu Server has always been my go-to because it seemed to be the most popular a few years ago. Now, i tend to gravitate towards Fedora and CentOS for my test servers and lab stuff. I will be the first to admit that I am far from an expert but I am trying to learn it as quick as possible. I am however running Mint at home. Thought about trying Fedora desktop though. I just hate always switching. I end up using the desktop as a glorified web browsing box and never actually put any files on it.

Redhat no gui was my first exposure to linux. Shortly after, Suse.

TRS-80 with a joystick, cassette deck, and a word processing cartridge. Don't remember what year it was. Wish I still had it to show my kids.

The logic (according to the bosses) for an email-type system is to retain messages and have the normal features. The old system forced you to check the messages as soon as you logged in to the software. Not sure how they expect to get everyone to check a new system daily and actually use it.

Current email platform is Hosted exchange with Outlook. Not all employees have company email and management feels they don't need it. They want a replacement "messaging" system that has the look and feel of email. If it were up to me, I would just give everyone a regular email like normal.

Good morning all. We use software that has an internal messaging system that functions like email. The new update from the software vendor is removing that feature but we still use it daily. I set up the Openfire/Spark IM platform but I want to try something else that is more like email versus IM. My initial thoughts are to set up an email server on a VM internally such as Nethserver Mail or Zimbra, but I may be overthinking it.... Thoughts?

Quality is the same. Going to try an MKV file as soon as MakeMKV site is back up.

@wirestyle22 The data is on a ReadyNAS 2120 and the server is a separate VM.

I'm going to try MakeMKV later and see if there is a difference in the raw MKV file (noticeable) and then go from there.

Plex is running as an Ubuntu Server (17.04) VM in Hyper-V Server 2016. Going off memory - I believe it has 4 vCPU and 8G RAM. It seems to transcode fine and can support multiple streams.

I'll have to try playing it directly off a PC this evening.

@dafyre On the ripping software and Plex, I have everything set to the highest it will allow. I think it all goes back to the ripping but I am not sure.

@dashrender Exactly! I rip to the highest setting the software will allow but it just seems it could be better. I know it shouldn't be so confusing.

@dafyre There are no streaming issues as far as bandwidth, etc. It is just the "quality" of the playback. I realize it is not playing straight off a DVD but I feel it should be better.

That is my issue. I guess I made the wrong assumption. What file format is preferred for direct streaming with no transcoding? Seems everything I read says the devices can Direct Play .MP4 with no transcoding. Quality is just not there.

I have Plex running as a VM and the media as a mount on a ReadyNAS. It works great. I use it for music the majority of the time. I bought Magic DVD Ripper and ripped a few movies as a test. I had the settings on the highest quality in MP4 format but feel the playback quality is lacking. I know some of you stream video. What is your preferred method to get video from disc to a file? Maybe I need another format besides MP4. I thought about MKV but don't want to have to re-rip the colection in the future. I use FLAC for my audio and have zero complaints.
