@Dashrender yeah or like $55 with Cloud PBX + $20 device management. Trying to think of what else we can throw on the Microsoft stack.

When will a Linux desktop go mainstream? If I were an IT Manager or IT Service Company I would spend all my time making that conversion. There are enough web apps and we even used a cloud version of CAD we've been testing for Autodesk for yours.

      Whats the hold up?

Intune looks to still be separate, so Intune Enterprise plus AD Premium $20/user/month?

@scottalanmiller we are looking at off loading our document management system. I work at a law firm and we create 3000 to 5000 documents a day easy. Talking to one vendor that is cloud based and they quoted us that we need 3 Mbps connection for 250 people.

Is it a dedicated/bonded circuit to their data center or something?

Whats the budget for this, I think that makes all the difference in the world.

At $9/seat it better do a lot. For around that much you could get a Windows Enterprise license with Intune (or whatever its called now)

The free option would it least be good for controlling logins. The $1 option seems to only add some things like self service password resets.

The mobile clients would have to be VPN connected (to Azure) wouldn't they? Maybe not before log-in because of cached credentials... but still, they aren't always cached.

I don't think so. They join to an Azure domain which is available on the public internet.

Ah I see. That makes perfect sense.

I was thinking SSO from on-prem to Azure, got mixed up.

That is exactly how Microsoft pitched it a couple years ago. I thought maybe Azure AD would sync to my AD and Office 365 then desktops would login with 365 ID. This looks way better.

That is if it works well.

I've tried this with Azure Connect but it was for a VPS running a domain controller. This Azure AD looks promising.

I hadn't seen the SATA storage option but I've only Vultr to deploy freeswitch, freepbx and kamalio.

Only visible to existing customers, so if you aren't signed in when you look, it is not visible to you.

I found it, hadnt clicked on the tabs while create a server yet. Thanks for the heads up on this!

I'm less worried about physical theft than I am about someone plugging a USB stick in and infecting the host, etc.

Infect it how? Can you describe this attack vector? When you plug a USB stick into a server, assuming that you have been breached in a datacenter to this level which is essentially unthinkable, and assuming that you've not disabled the USB ports, what would cause the files on the USB stick to be executed, or even mounted?

Dont you watch House of Cards?

    • RE: Where Are You Running Nextcloud

There was a time when we needed to access 5TB of live data from 4 different offices. Because of the windows storage API you cant use dropbox to sync between servers where the files our being editing over the network.

I hadn't seen the SATA storage option but I've only Vultr to deploy freeswitch, freepbx and kamalio.

I was thinking with block storage you would either have to buy more storage than you need or thin provision it. I would hate to have to resize the partition constantly whenever I needed to expand block storage.

@scottalanmiller I was thinking about how you would handle the block storage on vultr. Would you have to thin provision the file storage or would it be easy to expand block storage size without by resizing the partition as needed?

And then how do you backup? Was planning on loading this up today.

If you start from scratch with a new domain what are you missing vs migrating a domain? Are there group policies?

This is pretty exciting then. I believe I saw a cost of $1 or $2 per month per user or object, can't remember.

    • Azure Active Directory a replacement for AD?

I am curious as to whether or not you can deploy a domain using Azure Active Directory. Is it just a cloud version of ADAM (Active Directory Application Mode) which was more for apps/development or can it be used as a sort of "domain controller in the cloud".

We have lots of field computers deployed and I have used DirectConnect for AD authentication to get rid of the VPN. That has been much more reliable but it requires more licensing cost that I care for.

The deployed machines in question are in the field merely to control and monitor wireless equipment thatstay at sea for months. I would love to create a "cloud domain" for authentication (and group policies?) but I am about to setup a separate domain server on the cloud to move this off our network.

Its something I long assumed would happen but I am not sure that is its real purpose of the Azure AD service.

I remember owncloud, are you just running it off a virtual server in the cloud then?

Do they have the mobile apps like owncloud?

Now I have something to do all day tomorrow...

The two biggest arguments that always have to be addressed are

      1. speed of access to file shares
      2. access to the client/server LoB app used now.

You normally flippant answer of don't use them is not the acceptable answer to the business principles that make the decisions. Yes, times are changing and WAN speeds and new technologies are moving things, but these two points have to be properly addressed to make any kind of realistic move to colocation for the SMB space.

The last place I worked had a very small number of employees (~15) but the size of the files they dealt with made it impractical to move data off site. With an 18Mb connection, doing CAD work with files that are multiple hundreds of MB in size isn't feasable. They use DropBox for some things, but the large majority had to be hosted on site.

We have a huge number of CAD files and maps in house as well. Around 10TB and at any moment we may have to browse and find something.

Have looked at Panzura and Nasuni a few times but the cost of a storage gateway is still somewhat high.

Did a Google search the other day on the most secure or and Qubes was at the top. I tried to install it in Virtual box but had a problem with partitioning the drive.

Instead, I just may backup my laptop, install Qubes, and then restore windows as an AppVM, or its own domain.

I haven't tried with Windows yet, last a read there was no audio and limited GPU support. Also Windows isnt my idea of a secure desktop, no matter what it runs with, lol.

Would be interested to know how you fair though.

    • Monthly Subscription Billing Service

I usually write my own shopping carts and process monthly subscriptions via authorize.net. Lately I have been looking at stripe.com but also looking at subscription management packages.

On this current project we have a small startup team and my hands are already full with our backend automation and provisioning stack.

Does anybody have an experience or recommendations for a full package or a managed service that automates sign up and subscription management. I would then look for that service to have an API or post to trigger my provisioning and processioning systems.

Hope that makes sense. I can literally do this with paypal but I prefer the way stripe.com handles direct deposits in a more timely manner.
