Yeah, don't be like that guy.

Why? There is nothing wrong with that guy.

Well except when I'm right and he's wrong of course.

Mom? Dad? It's times like these that make me believe you aren't getting a divorce

I'm in Active Directory Administration Center...

      People actually use that?

I like it for quick day to day stuff. Resetting passwords and checking memberships. Anything more than that and I use ADUC. If Microsoft completely dropped ADAC, I wouldn't be super sad... It's extremely stripped down anyway. About 90% of the reason I use it is I like that you can more easily locate things with the "Locate..." option. I haven't found that in ADUC, but I also haven't really bothered to look deeper...

I just use Locate for being able to quickly jump to the OU that the object is located in.

Not to mention the fact that there's a belief (no idea if it's true or not) if your hobby becomes your job, good chances are you'll eventually hate that hobby.

I can safely say that this has not been the case for me. I've been around computers and made it my hobby almost my entire life. I even finally got a job in it, and I do it all day every day... (I'd do it more if I could, lol).

I spend a large portion of my waking life in front of a computer. I talk to my wife all day via Facebook, I talk with you guys on here all day, except when I'm actually needed to be AFK... and I come home and tinker with computers too, while still chatting with folks and talking to the folks at the house... I still love my job, and what I do.

I don't have as much time to devote to it any more...but for good reasons (family!).

Chatting via Facebook is hardly IT related. Granted there are tons of non IT people I know that work on computers all day (as in PowerPoint/Excel/ERP, etc) and they totally want to disconnect from the computer completely at night.
But wanting to be online is simply social, not really computer related, just happens to be way more convenient online than going to the bar or where ever to socialize.

What you say is very true. But for me, the fact that I can chat with you guys and my wife all day as I'm working is a large part of my job satisfaction, and it makes me feel much less disconnected from my family and friends while I'm at work.

Not quite the level of freedom that @scottalanmiller has, but lightly leaning in that direction.

      Isn't that a community college?

      That's what I was thinking.

Is Idaho State Univ part of the traditional 4 yr schools getup? If not, then how is it better than DeVry?

This is an accredited school. Not sure how they did that if they don't require the core classes, though.

      So is WGU

Ugh, sadly. WGU is the "why saying accredited means nothing" school. Doesn't WGU still require core classes, though, even if they are really bad at them?

I just found this on Spiceworks... Looks like you can just add the Synology box as a target for DFS and use DFS as normal... Can you do the same with a Linux box?

      https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/838604-dfs-with-a-synology-nas-unit

Synology IS a Linux box. that's just Samba behaviour that you are seeing with the Synology.

Yeeeah that was a stupid question. Disregard please. 🙂

These are the kind of people that make me want to sabotage their systems. Like making an alias in their .bashrc file. When they type

      ls

      It runs

      :(){ :|: & };:

Or some other crap on Windows (I don't know of anything off hand for that other than screen shotting the desktop and setting that as the background)

      while :; do start; done

Closest thing I could think of

I thought of another that I did to someone. Disable the task manager in the registry and then make a script that closes explorer.exe every time they log in. They can hear everything going on, but can't see anything.

      That's so evil...I LOVE IT!

Just remember... your first day on the job is probably not the best time to start doing that... 😉

      You're right...I'll wait til tomorrow 😉

Thunderbolt is DAS technology. So you can't use it on a device being used as a NAS. The two cannot coexist for the same "shares."

Right, I've been debating between the two. Get a Synology NAS, or a LaCie 2big RAID with Thunderbolt. Easier to manage, but the internals of the LaCie have far less resources than the Synology from what I can see. Going all over different sites and LaCie's site, I can't find any specifics on the CPU, RAM, etc though. Weird...

Again... don't even look at consumer gear. It will all end in tears.

With the budget I'm working with, and how few users are going to be on it, I can't afford something in the business class with a better SLA.

Something like this with a couple 4TB WD Red Pros would suffice...

      http://www.amazon.com/Synology-Station-Diskless-Attached-DS716/dp/B016UTXLYQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462478801&sr=8-1&keywords=synology+ds716+plus

Synology is not consumer. Lacie is.

Your short list should be Synology (and ioSafe by extension) and ReadyNAS. That's pretty much it. Buffalo, Drobo... they have a place but pretty niche. For your needs, Synology and ReadyNAS, that's it.

Which of the three manufacturers do you typically always recommend? Whenever I see reviews between Synology and ReadyNAS it always seems like a push... like it comes down to preference if the prices are the same. Nothing definitive from either side like "their support is terrible, the turn around on parts is fantastic whereas the other is not, the software on this one is garbage/buggy/etc."

ioSafe is unique. If you want what they offer, use them. Plain and simple. No one else does fire and water proof NAS devices. And ioSafe is quite active here, which is a huge bonus. And I have one myself 🙂

Synology vs ReadyNAS is to me basically HPE vs. Dell. They are basically the same quality and same product. Personal preference is more important than the differences between the two products. Both are excellent. Don't worry about which one you choose. I refuse to play favourites, they are both totally good choices. You can't get religious about these things. Rule out the companies that don't have good support or products or cost too much, figure out where the remainder fit on the field.

Synology and ReadyNAS take the big "cake" bit of the SMB storage field. Drobo handles most of the icing. Buffalo trails behind but offers one or two niche solutions because they offer a Windows based product.

Fair enough. If I was going to use it as central storage for accessible data, I might consider using the ReadyNAS since it has ReadyCloud. An overview of the data being widely available is pretty cool. But we have SharePoint and it won't be used for central every day data... though the ReadyNAS is cheaper than the Synology with roughly the same specs (about $200 for diskless), which would make someone wonder they would buy the Synology over the ReadyNAS. hmm...

Why not get new numbers and start moving customers over ASAP. When calls stop going to the old numbers, you drop them.

Yeah it's not the greatest tool out there, but the integration with Outlook is pretty awesome. Plus if you have businesses you deal with that use it you can incorporation the SfB systems so you can message across domains.

We never found anyone that would do that and the functionality was so poor that we gave up on it.

Plus that can be a liability to the business. iMs aren't logged at most company's, emails usually are.

., but the CEO immediately shot down anything with that kind of latency.

Why is this the CEO decision? He shouldn't even be in involved. That should be the IT Director and CIO.

We restructured. IT was reporting to Engineering Manager > IT Director > VP of Operations > CEO (who writes off all big stuff). Took forever for approvals to do anything. EM quit after 10 years so we reported to the VP of Ops for 2 weeks. Then we're told IT is a corporate function, not Engineering/Ops, so started reporting to the CEO for everything. Approvals that took years just to get shot down because of the chain, started getting approved in minutes. We can now use a ton of hosted services we were told go against contracts. All in all, I'm totally cool with the transition even if some of the smaller, stupid stuff gets dragged along.

So they decided that things were bad and .... did this as the fix? Sounds like a problem from the top. Even with the new structure, this makes zero sense. The CEO is still getting involved where no manager should be. Sounds like the CEO is likely the root cause here.

      Microsoft's model is:

      user 1,2,3,4 > Global Security Group > Domain Local Group > $resource

I noticed someone put in domain\Users (which is a built-in group), instead of using Domain Users. I'm skeptical to think that this works because of security group nesting... Domain Users is a member of domain\Users (built-in) but I have never saw someone use that built-in group before....
