    • RE: How did you get started in IT?

Started working at the age of 19. I wanted to get a job very soon, and upon checking found that if you do a basic hardware and networking course, you might get a job soon! Finished that and joined my first job as hardware engineer- to install and setup home computers, installing Windows XP and ME (Yeah, some wanted to use that!) Was there for about 8 months and then moved to a different city in India, working as junior system admin. Mostly worked as a one man IT so it had its own perks and pitfalls! 🙂

Mostly relied on google search, got later into server administration, then into MAC and Linux administration as well. Still lot to learn but I like what I chose as my career path. 🙂

    • File change auditing on Netapp

We have a netapp storage used with Windows 2008 server AD. I want to audit file access of all ad authenticated users and previously used ManageEngine AD Audit plus with netapp filer monitoring. Most times it didn't gave me the reports properly, and when I contact the support they told me that that feature is available only on new version. Upgraded as per their advise, and still didn't got the reports as needed. Basically we got some users who just moves folders to some other folders, I guess those are by MAC users but couldn't track the culprit. Our file permission is set in such a way that all needs read and write access to all the folders and so I couldn't restrict anyone from this.

Now since the AD Audit plus is expired (1 year), I am looking at an alternative. The reports has to be sent to management for review, so I would like to have a good tool with nice reporting features. Any suggestions?

I've seen Netwrix and Dell ChangeAuditor for NetApp (seems to be expensive)

If you've made the changes on vi editor, press the "Esc" key, then ":" key and then type "wq" (write and quit)

You can then check the changed using the command "cat filename"

If there are any installation errors, it would be shown on the wordpress page.

@Joyfano I believe this is a machine connected to network. If so, you just need to browse the wordpress server http://domainname/wp-admin/install.php from another computer. It will walk you through the next installation steps and then you can access wordpress admin page http://domainname/wp-admin/

@Joyfano What exactly you want to check? Are you able to browse the admin page of your wordpress installation?

Yes, vi is a supported editor in most linux distributions. You just need to understand the editor and know the various commands for using vi. But to be on the safe side, make it as a practice to backup any file before you edit. I normally use the cp command to copy the original file as .back before making any changes. Saved me a lot of times! 🙂

    • WD external disk error

I have a 2TB WD external disk and when connected gives me an error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". In disk utility, the disk shows up with partition map scheme as unformatted, and option for partitioning is greyed out. Checked using diskutil
      sudo gpt recover /dev/disk2
gpt recover: unable to open device '/dev/disk2': Permission denied

      sh-3.2# diskutil repairDisk /dev/disk2
Nonexistent, unknown, or damaged partition map scheme
If you are sure this disk contains a (damaged) APM, MBR, or GPT partition map,
you can hereby try to repair it enough to be recognized as a map; another
"diskutil repairDisk /dev/disk2" might then be necessary for further repairs
      Proceed? (y/N) y
Error repairing map: Couldn't read partition map (-69876)

Is there any other tools I could use to check this?

    • RE: Standing Desks

@technobabble If its cheaper there, I would suggest to get the hydraulic/automatic adjusted desk. And second day of use, feels very good. I might get one for my office too! 🙂

@joyfano Yeah, notepad++ on windows or sublime text on MAC. You can connect to the server using SFTP and directly edit the files using the tools mentioned.

Or you can use VI editor to edit the file directly from the command http://www.cs.colostate.edu/helpdocs/vi.html

This is what they have in Dubai, pretty expensive though. I've passed this to my management as they were also looking at some standing desks for users and in conference rooms as well!

    • RE: Standing Desks

It was surprising to see only one vendor in Dubai has a standing desk, an automatic adjusted desk, and cost approximately $1400!

After 2 days of searching almost all furniture and computer desk shops, finally ended up getting a bar table from ikea for now. Will try to assemble one if possible sometime soon, but for now, this looks good enough as a start! 🙂 Lets see how it goes!

      @scottalanmiller thanks!
But as I mentioned in my previous posts we've been acquired by a much bigger company and all major IT decisions comes from the head office now! 😞

So am no more the decision maker on these. They have a global rollout coming in soon and we will move from Zimbra to exchange.
