NethServer is the place to look first. And they are active here in the forum.

Thanks for mentioning us, I'm still here. Just mention me or @nethserver
All things I just read here about NethServer are correct, it's worth noting that

      • NethServer is extremely modular, you can add just what you need and nothing more
      • if you can install CentOS 7 you can install NethServer 7, period šŸ™‚
      • NethServer avoids learning all those skills and saves your time. You can do almost everything by webui

      I hope it helps.

    • RE: Substitutes for Active Directory and Windows Server

@Eltolargo said in Substitutes for Active Directory and Windows Server:

@JaredBusch we agree on that no questions about it. I meant having email, firewall, Ad/DNS, DHCP, file server and VPN in one server that is a lot.

@Eltolargo you're not forced to do it. You can install a module on a server and another module on another one sharing the userbase. NethServer can join another remote NethServer using LDAP or AD
      Scenario:

      • NethServer1: firewall with VPN, Proxy, ecc..
      • NethServer2: mailserver, personal cloud and fileserver

NethServer1 joins NethServer2 so you can use NethServer2 users/groups for authenticated proxy or VPN users
That's just a pretty simple example.

Is NextCloud already in 7 and the site is just out of date? Or is it a "yet to be updated feature" that is yet coming?

Of course! Take a look at this

      @DustinB3403 take a look at https://www.nethserver.org:8080/en-US/Account
      Supported providers are:

      • Local OpenLDAP running on NethServer itself
      • Remote LDAP server with RFC2307 schema
      • Local Samba 4 Active Directory Domain Controller
      • Remote Active Directory (Microsoft or Samba)

Please bear with us if the webui doesn't look so straightforward, we're improving it along the way

not following any of the links, just read the thread, but this sounds like what ClearOS tried to do.

Of course but we're crazy and we want to do it better

@JaredBusch said in Did you ever try NethServer ?:

I am not a fan of magic all in one boxes in general. But once you need to build up something to replace a Windows DC, that thing generally has all these components.

You're not obligated to put all those stuff in "one magic box" bear in mind that @nethserver is extremely modular so you can just install one of our modules on each server that you sets up

I'm sorry for that guys, where are you running NethServer? VPS?

@scottalanmiller said in Did you ever try NethServer ?:

What's the reason for the green interface requirement? This seems like an unnecessary complication, there should never be any interface except the green interface on a server. What assumption is being made here?

Here we tried to answer all the questions about samba container.
