    • RE: Distro for school work?

I'll just try with regular ubuntu desktop first.

Unfortunately downloading the image from ubuntu was too slow, would have taken at least 5h according to the speed it had. Maybe coronavirus restriction somewhere...or a local mirror problem. Can't pick the mirror/location from ubuntu website...

Bittorrent came to the rescue though. Took exactly 4 minutes.

    • How to download Win 10 Enterprise ISO.

Needed this today so here it goes:

You can download ISOs with Microsoft's Media Creation Tool (MCT).
But some ISOs like Windows 10 Enterprise aren't available with the GUI but can be downloaded if you invoke it over the command line.

      C:\> mediacreationtool2004.exe /Eula Accept /Retail /MediaArch x64 /MediaLangCode en-US /MediaEdition Enterprise

Before downloading it will ask for a valid license key.

    • RE: Single 32gb DDR4 RAM vs 2x16gb

      @irj said in Single 32gb DDR4 RAM vs 2x16gb:

I just bought a pre-built desktop from Dell. I opted not to upgrade the memory as it was much more expensive to do through them.

My system is only coming with a single 8gb RAM stick which is obviously unacceptable. The motherboard has 4 RAM slots and supports up to 128GB.

I'm looking at single 32GB sticks vs 2x16. The single sticks are appealing to me because it makes it easier to upgrade in the future. I could eventually have 32x4 to make 128GB.

Now I don't see needing more than 40gb currently which is why I was thinking 32gb would be fine.

Ok that's alot of rambling... My main question is single stick performance vs using RAM in channel. What would you do?

BTDT. I would go with two 32GB.

The future is uncertain and it's much easier to just get what you might need right now. If you can imagine needing 40 GB I'd do 2x32GB right away. Then you have optimum performance and the same memory on both.

    • Launching Windows settings, screen shot etc from URI

This might be useful for some of you.

It's possible to launch some applications in Windows from a link on a webpage.
For instance open a certain settings page or opening windows snip.

This can be useful for support or when doing instructions on how things should be setup (for example microphone, sound etc).

You do this by using custom URIs instead of https:
      For example:

      • ms-screenclip:
      • ms-settings:network
      • ms-settings:printers
      • ms-settings:privacy-webcam

Windows 10 & 11 have a bunch of those built in.
      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/launch-resume/launch-default-app

It's suppose to work on all browsers.

NodeBB unfortunately doesn't have support for URIs so I can't post a link to show how it works. But you can write the link directly into your browser. For instance ms-screenclip:

Mid size enterprise? Then don't deal with that crap.

Decommissioned equipment is sold to recyclers that will securily erase all drives with certificates and then resell your equipment or the parts in it.

Passwords don't need a mix of uppercase and lowercase, numbers or special characters - and they don't need to be changed often. That's outdated recommendations.

Passwords just needs to be long. Search for NIST password guidelines for more info.

But its ghost shipped software, so we are left to come up with solutions.

Wont android APK allocate more RAM, there gotta be setting.

I don't think allocate more RAM is going to make a difference.

If you can't change the software on the server, your only option is to speed up the client.
Either you need to replace the hardware or use other software.

Start by trying using some other browser. They might be more suitable to your application.
      Here are some to try:

Two switches but looks like there is space for everything in the top switch?

Anyway, it's tricky to make it nice when you have to use what you have.

But different length patch cables make a big difference. Same color unless it's color coded for some reason.

I suggest the thin patch cables that someone from here recommended to me. They are awesome and a lot thinner than what it looks like. You can fit about three times as many cables in the same space.

      https://www.fs.com/c/28awg-slim-patch-cables-613

And yes, put 19" power strip on the bottom. Something like:
      https://www.fs.com/products/29452.html

I'd probably forgo the horizontal cable management and go directly from patch panel to switch. Perhaps even move them together. If you have vlans, reconfigure the switch so you cable it neatly.

      Family-Friendly Cloudflare DNS

Introduced about two weeks ago, Cloudflare now offers a family friendly DNS resolver.
      https://developers.cloudflare.com/1.1.1.1/1.1.1.1-for-families/

Basically you use it by pointing to 1.1.1.2 for protection from malware-serving websites or 1.1.1.3 for malware and adult content protection.

They're going to add some customization options as well in the coming months.

    • Advantages of CentOS or Fedora over Debian?

I usually use Debian for servers and it's been a long time since I tried anything else.

When using community supported distros for servers it seems like many favor CentOS and Fedora and I thinking maybe I'm missing out.

For those that are familiar with both, what advantage do CentOS or Fedora have over Debian?

@mlnews said in Non-IT News Thread:

California jury awards $15m over lost fertility clinic eggs and embryos

A California jury has awarded $14.9m (£10m) to five patients who lost frozen eggs or embryos in a 2018 storage tank failure at a fertility clinic.
The cryogenic tank malfunction at the Pacific Fertility Center in San Francisco ruined some 3,500 eggs, embryos and other genetic material. The jurors found a tank production defect was largely to blame. This is the first case to see an award for victims of a fertility clinic freezer problem, lawyers say. Three women and a couple will share the nearly $15m award after losing their frozen eggs and embryos, respectively. The tank manufacturer, Chart Industries Inc, will pay 90%, with the clinic being held liable for the remaining 10%. A Chart-made tank at the centre lost liquid nitrogen for a short period of time, which led to the destruction of some frozen material, the centre said.

The crucial missing part in the text above is that the manufacturer knew that product had a defect but didn't do anything about it. So they had it coming...

      @g-i-jones

Just guessing but I would take a look a the services for Remote Desktop and see what startup configuration they have and under what credentials they are running.

I suspect that when you log in certain services are started that should have been running before that.

Also do a bare installation without joining a domain so you have a fresh install to reference.
I'd also check the "allow remote desktop from any version" option.

    • RE: Need MS Access app re-written to something else.

      @JasGot

Also if I wanted to have this project done, I wouldn't waste my time trying to make some kind of program specification. Or make up answers for every possible question that the might come up. Or even figure out what hardware, software, database, programming language etc to use.

Use the developers expertise instead. Part of every project is to figure out what the goal, scope and expectations are and also potential problems and alternative solutions. The developer should be able to ask what he/she needs to know to accomplish your goals with the project. And come up with a solution for you.

Many customers waste their time trying to come up with some kind of specification that is not relevant or just completely unusable.

It's udev that has a rule with eth0 and the old mac address.
Don't know what distro you're running but try looking in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.
Delete the line that has NAME="eth0" in it. And change the line with NAME="eth1" to eth0.
And then you have to swap back eth1 to eth0 in your network settings.
