How often does the machine shut down? Can you drop a monitoring agent onto it?

Flatten the machine and reinstall Windows 7. Yes you could trouble-shoot it but this would immediately fix any software issues.

If it's hardware, that narrows it down a lot.

Is this a dell or HP system, that has a warranty? If so return it.

          Problem solved.

            Listen to @Breffni-Potter

If you'd like more options after you've ruled out software run the onboard diagnostics (weak sauce) or get yourself some free tools from UBCD. I like seatools v2 and memtest86+. I am happy to go into detail about both.

Also a very valid option, if unsatisfying.

@MattSpeller thanks all - yes its a Dell PC. Perhaps I'll speak with them.

                What is Seatools and Memtest?

For Seagate hard drive diagnostics and memtest is a free tool which checks for bad RAM.

Neither of which you want to do if the system is under warranty. Pass it off to Dell support, let them walk you through their checks.

There used to be a little song we sung back in the day... "Fdisk....format...reinstall..."

Now you just need to pop in the disk and reinstall 😛

Deos it bluescreen, or just power off? For a blue screen, you can also try whocrashed:
                      http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed
to see if it's a driver or something along those lines.

Others have posted some tools that will stress the hardware to see if you can reproduce the problem.

Remember, the more time you spend on "maybe it's this" fixes, the more money it costs to fix in usage of time.

Sounds like maybe a bad cap on the mobo. Overheats and dies...

This is an tls/ssl issue from the sounds of it. Is this some sort of machine that people remote desktop to?
Seems liek you have some software or driver issue that is causing the issue. You can run the dell system update to check for new drivers
Do you have other computers that are same make and model?
