Keeping up in the console world is actually quite hard. New stuff to buy constantly.

Hardware doesn't change That's so you are too busy to ask questions like

          • Why is this system less powerful than a 3 year old PC
          • Why am I paying to connect to an online service where I pay more for a game online than at a physical store? (PS Plus)
          • Why can't I upgrade the HDD, easily, myself? (XBOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😠 )
          • Why does everything cost so much? There's, what seems to be, a 20% console tax that you add on to the price of EVERYTHING

It's true. The console tax is astounding.

The last HP kit I bought abruptly required a care pack for firmware updates that was almost as much as the hardware. Fool me once...

Yeah I'm kinda pissed that HP is now requiring active maintenance to get firmware updates for servers.

Is it only for servers? And... why buys HPE servers without active maintenance. And... we were talking about HP, not HPE. Two separate companies. Which are people complaining about?

I'm complaining about HPE. Don't ask me why companies don't maintain active hardware support contracts - they just do. Now it's biting them in another way.

I haven't seen HP.com (consumer) pull any BIOS/Firmware updates yet. Hopefully that will never happen.

HPE servers are like EMC SANs, getting one without service contracts just doesn't make sense. Use SuperMicro!

Then why was an HPE firmware issue mentioned as a reason not to use HP equipment? I'm confused.

Assuming you keep servers for 5+ years, are you saying it's pointless to get an HPE if you don't carry a support contract for the entire life of the server? most HPEs come with a 3 year warranty/support. After 5 years the cost of support is generally so high to make it rarely worthwhile, assuming you can live without the server for a few days while ordering a replacement - and that would only be the case in a major system failure situation.

It wasn't. When did I or anyone say Not to use HPE hardware? I only complained that without an active support contract you can't get firmware updates.

Aww - yes exactly - So he had a 5 year old server that he wanted to update, and he couldn't get updates any more on a server that was purchased before this change, and now that maintenance now costs as much as a new server. ug!

Yeah, but that's HPE. Right? HP doesn't do any server stuff.

It was HP. A proliant n40l as a home server. There was no HPE then. I loved HP, I even sold their products as a rep, but I will never buy anything from that brand again. Sadly including printers and especially a gaming machine.

                                        This happened before the split?

Gotcha. I've never seen HP or HPE do this. But never used those little boxes either.
