It looks to me like it will be an email client.

Although, I tend to agree with @JaredBusch ... Do one or two things really really well, before you start adding everything else.

OwnCloud seems to have the File Syncing & Sharing well in hand though. I'd give their email client a try, as long as it integrates into Gmail, Google Contacts, and Google Calendar.

Never heard of ownCloud but tried watching some of the features videos

        https://owncloud.org/features/

and whoever made them sounds like a 14 year old boy going through puberty. Just can't keep watching.

At the core, ownCloud is basically a self hosted DropBox.

I use it at multiple clients and use it personally.

Hmmm guess I'll have to try it out. I like the idea of staying off the grid with my files. What's your beef against having your own hosted email server?

I have no objection to that if you want to host your own email, then do so.

                But on it's own server.

My biggest beef with having my own hosted email is how do I back it up? With Google / O365, I don't have to worry about that quite so much.

Disreagarding all of that. the question was simply about hosting my own email because of my earlier response.

If you ask me why I do not host my own email, then yeah. all the things you stated. I would never do it myself. there is way too much work in hosting email.

So it's going to be a full email server as well?

Appears to be so. Need more info, like maybe it is componentized and you can use it just for the front end or something.

I loved SBS for the SMB back then. They needed Windows, this had it all a lot cheaper. Now, I would still have preferred not to use it, but the price point made it the best Windows choice.

I'm cautiously optimistic, heavy on the caution.

They've done a good job with the rest of the plugins so I'll check it out when it's released, but I've really been enjoying offloading email hosting to cloud providers!

Eh? I though you, @scottalanmiller didn't like self hosted email because it is often way to expensive for someone to host themselves compared to what they get service wise going with something like Rackspace ($1 Spiceworks price, $2 normal people price + $1/user for activesync, or $4 for O365 email only).

Only that you mentioned the "it's the all in one that he doesn't like" when talking about email being added to Owncloud.

That may be one person's desire, but it seems more pressing to push on the issue of almost never self hosting email if possible.

I though you, @scottalanmiller didn't like self hosted email because it is often way to expensive for someone to host themselves compared to what they get service wise going with something like Rackspace ($1 Spiceworks price, $2 normal people price + $1/user for activesync, or $4 for O365 email only).

That's correct. What makes you say that as if I said something contrary?

Only that you mentioned the "it's the all in one that he doesn't like" when talking about email being added to Owncloud.

That may be one person's desire, but it seems more pressing to push on the issue of almost never self hosting email if possible.

Maybe, but that wasnt what I was answering 🙂

and whoever made them sounds like a 14 year old boy going through puberty. Just can't keep watching.

At the core, ownCloud is basically a self hosted DropBox.

I use it at multiple clients and use it personally.

Hmmm guess I'll have to try it out. I like the idea of staying off the grid with my files. What's your beef against having your own hosted email server?

It's the all in one that he doesn't like. Same basic reasoning as to why Windows SBS was so horrible.
