So I really need another server in my home lab, nothing special, just enough that I can setup my lab and test out some of the really cool things from the Xen world (HALizard) and backup tools.

but I'm not finding anything even remotely reasonable.

Does xbyte have a clearance section that I could "dig through" and buy from you guys? @Lyndsie_xByte

I've been wondering about this too. Stuff that you wouldn't sell to customers generally or that you won't provide support for?

More like a scratch and dent section at a appliance store. Although cosmetics on a server are probably eaiser to fix then on an appliance and it matters less to customers what they look like.

I've had good luck finding stuff on amazon and ebay. You usually get some kind of warranty (30 days or so).

You have to be a bit more careful with what you buy, but you could try Craigslist.

I picked up a 1U Dell PE (??) last year for about $100... wasn't much but it was enough for the task I needed.

Yeah I did a search on craiglist in my area and there was a single post, after I replied the post was gone in a few hours. So I'm assuming the server was already sold.

For a lab, I don't need pretty, just functional working equipment.

Searching on ebay people wanted close to $1000 for servers that were 6+ years old. No way is it worth that much. Especially from a No-Name seller.

Stallard Technologies (www.stikc.com) has PowerEdge 1950G2 in stock. They aren't something I'd want to keep turned on all the time, but they do include the basic DRAC. 32GB RAM and 2 E5345 CPU runs ~$200. I'd imagine one of those would be enough to start.

Wow, where are you looking? Granted shipping costs as much as the servers, but I've seen plenty in the $2-600 range.

If you have a business account anything over I think $50, you don't pay for shipping even if it isn't prime.
