In your case with the use of NodeBB I can see the group chat being useful..
Not sure it would be useful here or not yet. Have to think on it.

But there have been plenty of times (on any forum I have ever been on) that i have had a PM going with someone and would have loved to be able to pull another person in suddenly.
Hangouts and Skype work great, but require adding to circles/contacts and all that for interaction. A forum chat is simpler and works great for a simple quick conversation. Hence the term Chat.
