      Does MDADM support hot swapping of drives?

        Yes, MD RAID is hot swapable.

          Does anything specific need to be done to perform the swap, or just plug and let it resilver?

            It's hot swap, not blind swap, so yes. It has to be fully removed in the OS, powered down. Then removed. Added in and spun up.

                If you want to do a cold swap, yes.

                  Your hardware must support hot swap too, you can't just yank hard drives out of a box just because the software is okay with that.
