Email Forwarding Service?

Any email service will normally do this. You can just run your own Postfix server for this if you want.

Why bother with forwarding? If you are going to have to pay anything, why not just get a google business account and have them host it directly?

Why would he have to pay? Postfix is free. He could even run Zimbra.

I'm unfamiliar with Postfix other than seeing the name peppered around the forums. Is it free as in someone else hosts it and provides access completely free? or would he have to stand up a server, etc, etc.
The same question applies to Zimbra. I think that email software is free (do I recall that correctly?), but he would still have to host and manage it.Assuming he has to layout any type of cost, it might be more cost effective to just have Google host it themselves, small low cost solution.

Postfix is GPL'd. Completely free, use however you want. It's the leading (now over Sendmail finally) free, open source MTA.

Postfix is the defacto Linux email server. Generally it is installed on every Linux distro.

Yes, also free, open source GPL'd software. Zimbra is just a big package that includes Postfix.

You still have to pay to host it though. I would have thought a Google account would ultimately work out cheaper and significantly less hassle to maintain?

Depends how many addresses he wants. And maybe he already has a server somewhere. So it might be a free add on if he has anything currently. SMTP Proxy takes effectively no resources.
For $5/mo you can be on Vultr or Digital Ocean, for example, and proxy a heavily used domain.

AFAIK all the registrars I've ever used have offered e-mail forwarding free of charge.

Good point, forgot about those. Most web hosting services do too (assuming that you have one already.)
