      http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1271282-windows-sbs-2003-standard

      • Not virtualized
      • No full backups, only data backups
      • No DR or recovery plan
      • Has not updated the OS for a dozen years
      • Running SBS instead of the normal OS (not so much a BP as just rarely good)
      • Stayed on a long dead server architecture, IA32 has been dead for servers for eleven years

Well he is probably screwed on that point given his lack of other options. He would need new hardware to go to pretty much anything else. He could update to 2008 but he is limited to what will run on 32bit hardware and, I assume, needs to recover his lost data.

haha.... sounds like someone needs to learn some of the basics of systems administration and configuration... should really make a book on that... and use these as wonderful examples of what to not F^&^((& do.

It gets worse... no RAID for the system, SSD for boot but not data...

I think that the worst thing there is he didn't word-wrap a single sentence, until the very end. Everything is it's own line until the end.

And his response for it being broken is "I have no time to learn". There is no way someone is busy 24/7 that they don't have enough time to learn something new that will save them work in the long run.

He has a great attitude, though. He's taking everything constructively and looking to make changes. I'm impressed.

Well he did have to leave for lunch to take a breather.

IT Really shouldn't be so stressful that people have to rage like this. Had he come the a community and asked before attempting to implement he'd already be in great shape.

Currently he's completely bent and cooling off. So helping him to understand may work, but he'll need a good amount of hand holding.

Seems that way. It was a tough start too, with him being pretty upset and venting in the OP. But immediately he went rational, explained the hows and whys and stuff and is really looking for good feedback.

I guess that thread shows the quality of IT staff you get when you pay them a non-profit company IT wage... incompetent with a chance of irrational. Talk about "take whatever you can get". Hope he keeps his head out of his ass after SW fixes what he broke (for free).

@RojoLoco He's had a chance to cool off a bit after he gets some food in him, lol. He's doing things the "way he's always done them" -- and that's not a bad thing (Best practices aside), because it always works...until it doesn't.

At best, he learns a bit from Scott about RAID 1, RAID 10, and virtualization. At worst, he just stays frustrated and keeps digging himself deeper.

Well he's getting his RAID 10 Array built now, and should report back soon. I'm steering him to XenServer. If other want to stir him in other directions go ahead.

@scottalanmiller Hopefully he has an actual RAID card.

Hopefully (if he does) the drives are actually connected to it, and not the motherboard....
