@scottalanmiller... Being new I don't think I have developed a preference yet or if I ever will, haha. From the quick bit of research I just did I'd say they each have their place, but big-endian sees more use.

Mostly bi-endian these days, except for AMD64 little endian 🙂

Thanks for the welcome! I'm a retired SW dev who now volunteers at 3 Boys and Girls Club locations keeping their network and servers running. I stumbled onto this great site when searching for info about XenServer since I'm being pushed into a switch from Hyper-V by the loss of 5nine Manager. I actually purchased the 5nine license a year ago, but no budget for renewal this year. I was going to get by with the limited, free version... so much for that plan.
As a side note, I've benefitted a good deal over the years by some of the valuable information provided by @scottalanmiller in posts on other sites, so I'm looking forward to lurking here for additional education 🙂

                            Use KVM instead.

Wow, awesome. XenServer is definitely a decent option. But as Jared says, KVM is good, too. If you go the XS route, you'll want to be using it with XenOrchestra (XO.) The XSXO pairing is pretty good. But it is starting to lag behind KVM in a lot of ways.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually evaluated Proxmox along with XS and liked the fact that it was KVM based, but didn't like the confused business model (free/not free) and the steep licensing fees for paying customers.

I want a management GUI and didn't know about virt-manager until I saw a reference here. Maybe I need to re-evaluate.

I run Linux on my desktop and laptops, so I'm not opposed to doing some cli management, but like XO (already built from source using @scottalanmiller 's script).

So, should I back out XS now while it's early? Maybe I need to move that question out of the Welcome section?

Yeah, make a thread if you want. Here is VMM on Korora 25 Cinnamon with both a local VM and a remote connection to Fedora 25 minimal install running KVM.

ProxMox was horrific on SW. They had loads of scam posters and legal threats. I'd never use them, I don't trust the people involved. And the idea is bizarre at best, KVM plus a weird container thing all mashed together.

You will have a lot more flexibility using KVM instead of Proxmox or XenServer. With KVM, you can either use Virt-Manager or virsh to manage your VM easily.

And since you use linux on your desktop and laptops, your only options to manage XenServer with CLI or XO, which is not bad at all.

It can get difficult managing Proxmox it the WebUI is not accessible. Plus you only options for VMs is raw (LVM thin provision).

KVM is easily the best choice for you. Since you are using Linux already, it's that much easier.

What Linux flavour(s) do you use?

That seems to be the general consensus around here. Create a thread and we can all talk about it.
