which to me may mean that you can only run 2 identical cards in SLI,

this is my understanding as well - they must be identical.

But if you are using any in SLI, you probably have to use them all in SLI if they are all the same. But, if you wanted to SLI 2 cards (it'd be silly to try to SLI 1 card 😉 ) you should be able to install different cards and add more monitors.

Sorry for my poor wording. What I actually meant was:

May mean that if you have 2 identical cards, you can only run them in SLI, instead of independent of each other to operate autonomously so you can use them for different monitors.

I don't know why that would be true, but it might be.

Currently running a Corsair CX750M. Does anyone know how I can tell whether that'll be enough to support two GTX 970's running independently ( non-SLI )? I believe SLI uses less power and two independents would use more, but the power recommendations are for one card only so I'm not sure how to be sure and exchange the CX750M if necessary. Thx.

            @creayt 225w/gtx970 IIRC

You're not going to have much room left over

Edit: independant or SLI, I'd still budget the full dollop of juice for each one, total the system needs and add 30-50%

              Good to know. Thanks!

Which would you go with between these three?

I was just looking at the hx750i for my next build... from what I could tell the HXi line is one of the best options for PSUs on the market right now.

Here's the summary of TechPowerUp's exhaustive review of the HX1000i. Long story short: it's really good!

It's a beautiful thing, this GTX 970 business.

                        Running a 27" Dell 3840x2160 @ 60hz w/ 3 OTHER 27" 1440p screens all at 59 or 60Hz without a single hiccup on this single card.

I had no idea what I was missing in the graphics card department.

@MattSpeller I don't know why but I assumed that w/ a 4k in the mix the 4 screens would be slightly too much for it or that I'd at least notice some slowdown. Turns out not to be the case and now I'm even debating returning the HX1000i...

That said, I am making that assessment based on about 5 minutes of use. And now I'm noticing some keystroke delay. I'll withhold real judgment until a few days in.

@creayt Get one of these if you want to know for sure

                                http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882715001

Other thing to consider is the larger your power overhead the cooler the PSU will run, the longer it will last. The holy trinity of electronics life.

                                http://www.eetasia.com/STATIC/ARTICLE_IMAGES/201306/EEOL_2013JUN10_OPT_POW_TA_01Fig2.jpg

MTBF of caps vs operating temp (very rough guide but gives you a solid feel for the effect of temp on electronics). About every 10c you go up, life goes down by half.
