I ordered a new motherboard, water cooler, case, and power supply to perform a transplant on my current Xeon 1240 v2 / 32GB / 850 Pro system to use for the next X months while I gain overclocking knowledge and while the Skylake processors slowly materialize. But then I read somewhere that they're actually going on sale next week after the Gamercon conference ( or whatever it's called ). If that's true, should I probably just cancel my current mobo etc. orders and wait? What would you do?

I'm thinking I can buy an unlocked SkyLake and OC mobo and then just run everything at stock while I learn the process of OC-ing, and with that approach will get the best of both worlds without sinking the $$ into the Xeon migration, which will also let me keep it as a server for side use.

Thoughts? Do Skylake K procs indeed come out next week as far as anyone knows?

Rumor is that the release will be August 5th, that's tomorrow. So might be worth just waiting to find out.

Skylake will retire VGA support. That's crazy. It's been SO long.

That's good because they're sure an eyesore. It'll be nice not to have a blue robot chunch hanging off the side of my fancy laptop in theFuture.

If this is accurate they're actually cheap too.

                Holy. Shit.

If that's true they just cannibalized their WHOLE product line

Looks like those are at 1000 proc quantities. So before resellers' markup. I'm not sure what margins are like but I'd guess they might be anywhere from $30-ish to upwards of $100 a proc, who knows.

In other news, my new case, cooler, and mobo arrived while I was out at lunch. Sigh.

Well, my favourite PC shop has listing space for Intel Socket 1151 as of today.

@creayt , by space I meant actual space... as in not filled with anything 😉

New system is up and stable. Pictures to follow.

Even pre-OC, SSD performance appears to be slightly faster on the new mobo than it was on the original t110.2 system.

Running an R7 360 at the moment, my EVGA GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0 arrives tomorrow. I'm excited.

                                  Super disappointing 😞

"But support for DDR4, M.2, and a faster GPU make up for lacklustre CPU performance."

M.2 can't compete w/ a single Sata Samsung 850 in rapid mode, integrated graphics don't apply to me. My question is, what does the switch to DDR4 bring? Would a system w/ an identical processor and all other components be palpably faster?

                                    Agreed 😞

                                    Dear Intel,

WTF?! Is this what happens when you have no one hot on your butt? Can we expect further disappointment?

                                    Sincerely,

                                    Matt.

PS - keeping the prices low didn't go unnoticed.

Just looked at a bunch of Z170 LGA1151 boards - if you go with premium HDD options (sata express or M2) you're going to need an add in sata controller to get more than 4 drives!

                                      http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132567

4 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (gray) These SATA ports are for data hard drivers only. ATAPI devices are not supported.

                                      1 x SATA Express port (gray, compatible with 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports)

1 x M.2 Socket 3 with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices support (both SATA & PCIE 3.0 x4 mode) When the M.2 Socket 3 is operating in SATA mode, SATA port 1 will be disabled.

Intel doesn't actually "wow" anyone very often. Unless AMD is eating their lunch after kicking them in the shins, they really don't try very hard.
