Every time I log in, I see a new higher and higher number for the amount of users on ML. Right now its up to 5.4K. Kind of exciting.
When you open recent users though... there is only 1 real person every 10 days... the rest are just a boat load of bot accounts and scammers. Whats up with that?

Just the nature of online communities. Any community will naturally have that.

How do you think other communities report so many users - more than seem possible?

Agreed, every community gets them. Part of it is scammers wanting to seed accounts that they can use later, so they don't seem brand new.

Even once some kind of spam prevention gets added to registration, some spam bots will still work around it. Just part of any online community.

You see it on wordPress and other blogs too. Just the nature of online registration.

It's a sign of popularity, though!

@g.jacobse that there are lots of idle users? I don't think so.

AJ and I had discussed this a while ago. Not much to be done. Hundreds have been manually deleted. But they pour in. They don't hurt anything so not really a big deal.

The NodeBB platform has no capabilities, as I've been told, for a Captcha or email verification of account. As others have said, this is common on any online community. The difference between ML and some communities is that some advertising based on these numbers. ML just has a counter that cannot be modified. It's the difference between active and passive marketing.

New features are out now. We're dealing with more important issues now, though. With the 0.5.0-2 upgrade chat is broken and a few other bugs are really killing us. Trying to address that before we look at the new complex spam filtering options since the accounts don't impact anything. Not the squeaky wheel post-upgrade.
