Facebook is getting out of the business of gift card peddling.
You will no longer be prompted with a wrapped-present icon to send your friends a Starbucks (SBUX) or Target (PBCFX) gift card on their birthdays -- Facebook's (FB, Tech30) Gifts service is set to be discontinued.
Launched in September 2012, Gifts will no longer be available as of August 12, according to a Re/code report. Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Gifts app was already scaled down from allowing users to purchase and send tangible presents, to exclusively e-gift cards activated by digital codes.

It was completely stupid. If I want to send someone a gift card, I'm not going to do it via Facebook.

hahaha yes why send it via FB if you can hand it personally right?
unless the person is too far but you can send it using other service.

I see how this can be convenient, but I agree with AJ, it was annoying and I personally would never use FB to buy something.

My bet is that Starbucks et al weren't making enough money to cover what they were paying Facebook for the privilege of getting suggested. Contracts are ending and now FB is scrapping the program.

@Nic Maybe when friends start sharing weird posts or those "you won't believe it until you watch this video" things, there will be an option to gift them a year of webroot.

That's not surprising. Often those kinds of programs cost a fortune and deliver relatively little.
