I agree with Jared on this, Why invent the wheel, plenty of plugins to use with Wordpress.
It's not for commercial use and he wants to learn or practice something specific. If this was for a business, I'd concur. But it's not, it is for fun. So doing what he is doing is fine. The extra time or effort are not negatives in this case.

Learning it with modern tools though seems to make sense - so doing it by hand seems crazy when everyone is deploying WP etc sites today. It's great to learn - why not learn what most people are doing then.. like WP?

Fair Enough, even if it's for fun, it's still going to be live on the internet, so security will still be important.
Why not use PHP and MariaDB? -
