Hyper-V must be more resource heavy since MS doesn't use it for Azure.

I do have an AD domain, and I still choose not to use it. Nobody ever trusts MS anywhere else, and there is nothing but hate towards them, yet everybody on here recommends Hyper-V, it doesn't make sense to me.
It completely depends on the environment, which determines what you should run. Obviously in yours Hyper-V has no benefits. In others, it may not make any sense to run anything but Hyper-V.
What you run in an environment shouldn't be emotionally based.

No SMB will have a real use-case for Azure Stack.... at least none that warrants the cost.

That doesn't mean it's a version of KVM that you or I can get/download.
