      Continuing saga.

Tuesday night user left Excel open with 10 or so different xlsx files open plus several other open programs. The system installed updates and rebooted at 7:37 PM.

Wednesday morning, the user noted that her computer was "Off" (the logs report it was in low power mode). She did something (doesn't recall what) to wake the computer and logs in.
She's presented with just a desktop, not the dozen plus windows she had open when left left the day before.

She clicks Outlook - then her computer jumps into action and re opens what appears to be all of the windows she had open when she left the night before.
Excel opened most if not all sheets with no indication of auto recover.
note - she saw a command prompt window open at this time as well, and it didn't go away on it's own, so she closed it without talking to IT

At the end of Wednesday, she closed all open programs and locked her computer.

Thursday (This morning) she logged in and opened Outlook - ok no change.
Clicked on Excel and was presented with this
      0_1525359861068_laura-excel-error.png

Those that are used to looking at Excel sheets when hovering over the icon will notice this view is abnormal. Typically you see the actual sheet in the mini view, and now we don't.

Upon clicking on one of these items, the title show [Auto Recovery].
The date shows the files are being recovered from May 1 (I couldn't get access to the page long enough to see if there was a time to see if it matched the Tuesday Night reboot of 7:37 PM).

This is the second day in a row she's come in and things are "just weird or different."
Me personally - I just accept it and move on - but normal users just don't do that. Furthermore (regardless of what JB says/thinks or otherwise) I can't tell this user to just deal (quitting over this at this point is just stupid).

I don't really see a solution to her problem, other than just - every day make sure everything is closed so updates don't close your stuff unexpectedly.

Two reboots tonight right before going home, launching and closing her typical apps, will likely get them back into a clean (no auto recovery) state for tomorrow.

Does the computer need to actually go to sleep mode?

That's what I was thinking. Sleep mode/hibernate have caused many issues in my world over the years. Now I immediately disable both when setting up new workstations.

Need? Does any computer "need" to?

Nope, it doesn't need to - and FYI, I did change to stop sleeping on Tuesday, But haven't confirmed via the log that it's not still doing it... because I made those changes 10 days ago.. and it was still going to sleep afterwards.

I was just trying to justify the case of sleep there, but if it still happening it might something else on the power configuration.

If the user wants to leave things open overnight the user can deal with things not being correct the next morning end of discussion

That is unrelated to the thread specifically. But yeah - I don't disagree... but again, management gets to rule the company.

We've got machines doing it that no one can stop. really sucks.

That is why I tell people the policy is to reboot every night before you leave for the day. Most people do... some don't. This is the exact reason why this is the policy.

Yup, I agree, end of day reboots are the smartest if you can get people to do it.

Most of our people do - the few (really the one) who doesn't is also the one in charge. I can't make them.

Sure you can. If it is company policy, you simply create a schedule task to reboot machines.

You, and others make it sound like I have a choice here - I only have two choices, perhaps three - 1) quit
                                          2) according to you all ignore her
                                          3) just stop talking to you all about trying to find solutions to provide to attempt to fix things.

                                            LOL - You're on a roll today!

Just stop covering up bad behavior.

You, and others make it sound like I have a choice here - I only have two choices, perhaps three - 1) quit
                                            2) according to you all ignore her
                                            3) just stop talking to you all about trying to find solutions to provide to attempt to fix things.

I, specifically, never said ignore her. In fact, I said you need to tell her a few not polite things.
