Due to CA's use of Facebooks first generation Graph API, it is possible that CA was accessing users' private messages, in addition to other profile data, using their data collection application. But the number of people who gave access to this was pretty limited, only about 1,500 it is believed. However, it is possible that anyone who spoke with those people through Messenger may have had their communications gathered as well, without permission.
