Right, so in this case, instead of that second server, purchase a single server, and spend the extra money on more Windows licenses.

And do what about no backups?

How many CALs are you going to need, roughly?

Let's see, I need a CAL for every user & server that connects to the "new 2016" DC?

Any user that will touch any service what so ever that new 2016 software provides.

        20/25 CALS max

DASs make great backup locations, too, if buying a whole new server doesn't make sense.

Nice idea, I hadn't thought of that.

KVM v Hyper-V?..I'd prefer to go KVM (not saying it's the best choice.)

huh, that's a lot of money. Is it warranted? I like the idea, but it's not about likes, it's about business cases. For example, do you have redundancies in your current VMs?

                Redundancies..can you re-ask?

A second server is pretty expensive, all things considered. How do you plan to use the second server? as a failover? You can only move Windows Server license once every 90 days - so having two servers in a HA setup requires having both servers licensed.

You definitely want backups - they should be stored on some other system. a secondary server to run things on is not a backup.

I'd go KVM unless you need things Hyper-V does natively that KVM doesn't...

yeah, I know was DAS is.. how is that a good place to put a backup, unless it's attached to a different server that's not running the VMs.

I believe the 2x Power Edge 2950's are better off in the trash bin!

Well, if they both work, use one of them. Keep the other for spare parts.
You can still attach a MD1000 to it or something.

To add, I haven't looked, but there's got to be an HBA you can put in a 2950 that'll read 2TB+ drives... to use with the MD100, for example.

I have an MD1000 set up using 8TB drives. It just depends on the HBA.

Yeah, exactly my thinking. Heck, you have three of these, keep two for spare parts, upgrade the internal storage to meet your needs, save some money on the hardware. Spend it on another Windows license.

                                      Maybe I'll keep both 2950 & use 1 as a spare.
The 2900 for sure is going bye-bye, it's got problems & for some reason, hard drives keep failing.
I even replaced the Perc controller & same thing still happens

I'd guess a bad power supply then. Getting rid of it sounds good in this case.

Has a reminder Hyper-V 2016 is not supported on the 2950s because Hyper-V requires processors to support SLAT.

Right, so in this case, instead of that second server, purchase a single server, and spend the extra money on more Windows licenses.

And do what about no backups?

DASs make great backup locations, too, if buying a whole new server doesn't make sense.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here?

                                            Direc Attached Storage

yeah, I know was DAS is.. how is that a good place to put a backup, unless it's attached to a different server that's not running the VMs.

Who cares is the storage is attached to which server. It is not dependent upon it unless you do something wrong.

So it Is a super fast backup target.

                                            Then you off-site from there.

If the server is dead you have to repair/replace before you can restore whether the backup is a DAS or a NAS.
