iOS: Play Music from NAS

Does anyone use a app on their iOS device to play music directly from a NAS? I have plenty of music, and know I can build / import play lists.
But my son is looking to just play a few songs directly from is iPad/Pod without connecting to iTunes all the time.
Ive seen some UPnP software is compatible.,.. just curious as to what if anything anyone is using...

Only thing I can think of is serve the media over http and play it from the browser.

Cool. When did "VLC for Mobile" get added? I had no idea that that was available for iOS.
