So in these states that don't require insurance, when someone hits you and causes thousands of dollars of damage, you then have to sue them to get them to pay for repairs?

Seems like a double negative to me.

Na, they just suspend your license until you pay up LOL

RSA 264:3 provides that, after a motor vehicle accident, the director of the Division of Motor Vehicles of the New Hampshire Department of Safety shall suspend the license and registration of the at-fault driver and shall suspend the registration of the owner of the vehicle involved in the accident (the suspension of the registration includes the surrender of one’s license plates). This suspension usually applies until the driver and/or owner have provided security to satisfy any judgment for damages resulting from the accident.

So you don't get to travel at all under your own control. That is even more reason for self-driving cars! You'd never be stranded somewhere.

IF you get into an accident that is your fault.

How many accidents have you got into where it is your fault? Some people, that answer is zero...just not for me πŸ˜‰

The point is being stranded, and only human drivers can be at fault for an issue. It is always a human issue that causes car wrecks.

So you'd never be stranded and out a lot of money.

There is no way I could live without a car and a bigger vehicle for hauling stuff where I live. We also live in a rural area and there is NO public transportation at all here.

Public transportation? Around here it's called hitching a ride in a buggy.

Also the accident situation still means you are without a vehicle for some amount of time. Usually the time it takes to call your insurance, make a claim and then go to the car rental place.

If we had self driving cars, one accidents would almost completely disappear, and two a replacement car / ambulance would be called immediately.

AMBULANCE!!!! I called an ambulance in July when my GF stopped breathing. Cost me $1500 for the 5 minute ride.

                  No thank you.

Also medical emergency help must be provided, and if you are unable to pay for it they don't just refuse you. It's not as if they ask for cash at the scene before they gurney up the person having a heart attack.

One which really is here to detract from the conversation at hand. Medical insurance is there because bodily parts fail, and accidents happen (and the health system is rigged in such a way to essentially mandate it).

[line about medical care was grounds for starting flame war].

You being not covered is entirely on you (especially with The Affordable Care Act)

                            So, it's now MY fault?

                              @Son-of-Jor-El I didn't mean to upset you.

It was about the concept of refusing insurance, and then being sticker-shocked at the price of medical services. It can't be had both ways.

@Son-of-Jor-El I'd disagree with you that you have a need for a car, you have a need for transportation / work-tool vehicle.

If you could avoid paying $300-600/month and have Toyota worry about the maintenance of the vehicle (and it cost you pennies in comparison) wouldn't you want to save that money?

I'm 9 hours behind... so maybe this was already covered

Nothing about renting/calling a cab means the costs would go down.

If anything - self driving cars might really hurt the poor badly, just like how higher fuel prices affect the poor more than it does the wealthy.

No because my guess is it would work like a lease where you cannot do certain things to the car because technically, you don't own it. A simple matter of changing the radio would be a hassle.

Also, and your talking to a car guy, one of the BEST things about owning a car is customization. Even something small like replacing a diverter valve to a full blown blow-off valve just for the noise is fun as all hell!! πŸ™‚

You're missing the point - you wouldn't be getting the same car each time.. so customizing it would be pointless.

You can't customize the train you take if you live in NYC. The car could be just an extension of that.

You're mentioning of needing a vehicle for work - OK I can see the need for a work vehicle that could be customized, so sure - there will be a market for them. But compared to the current modern car ownership market.... yeah I don't think so, I can definitely see many household not owning anymore.

Of course some markets just won't be large enough to support a taxi-like service, so if you're rural, ownership will be significantly higher than in suburban areas.

Actually it can. I'm not even clear how one could preclude the other. No matter how much you pay in insurance in the US, you can still get huge medical bills. Most of us avoid the insurance because, no matter how bad that sticker shock is, it's still less than the insurance cost.

Actually it's a national issue. I'm not coverable under Obamacare. There isn't a plan that covers my family. That's not a personal issue, that's an national issue.

Possible, but I'm guessing it is unlikely. The poor pay huge maintenance costs today, take huge risks from less safe vehicles. While it might not make things cheaper for the poor, it will level a lot of the playing fields in other ways.

Also, and your talking to a car guy, one of the BEST things about owning a car is customization. Even something small like replacing a diverter valve to a full blown blow-off valve just for the noise is fun as all hell!! πŸ™‚

But that isn't the goal of driver-less cars. There will always be hobbyist. People who build or customize a car. And it will disappear eventually as people realize that buying a car, new or used is not the smart choice.

Sure you may purchase a used driver-less car to customize, but why? Make the "taxi" company deal with maintaining it. Imagine if you could hire a ferrari for $100/day?

I guess I see it different from you. Not only are there "hobbyists", but there are people who love the freedom of a car. There's really nothing like jumping in whenever you want. And it's YOUR car, not some company's car. I don't even want to get into how bad these cars would be abused because people don't own them (see rentals).

A Ferrari wouldn't work for me here...at least today. Plus at $100 a day needing to get to work would run me $500 a week and some days $600 a week. I'm in IT brother!! I can't afford that!! LOL

that wasn't his point. His point was that you COULD rent it for A Day. What I don't understand is - you can already do that.
