Seems like asking for $58K would be reasonable.

I was thinking between $58-62K seems reasonable.

So what would be an appropriate way to actually say more is required?

        Hi ____,

Thank you for the offer but at the current offer I couldn't accept, I'm willing to take the position for 58K.

        I await your response.

        Thank you

Kind of. You might mention that you need it for financial feasibility. And that you are very excited about the position and just need to get the numbers to where it would work.

            Hi ____,

Thank you for the offer but the current offer I couldn't accept is not financial feasible for me, I'm willing to take the position for 58K. $58K would put it in a position I can accept.

            I await your response.

            Thank you

And the counter offer was immediately refused.

So if he wasn't willing to negotiate maybe the position wasn't worth looking into.

That would be my take. He wasn't able to make you an offer worth you taking. It is what it is. You aren't desperate or out of work, you are just looking for a place to move up in the world. If they couldn't match what you make currently, it probably wasn't much of a step up.

This of it this way, to you the counter offer was refused. To them, the offer was refused 🙂

Or worse it was a lot of added responsibility for the same amount of money.

Too many jobs get into the mindset that everyone that they hire is desperate and just happy to get an offer. They often forget that the people that they should be wanting to hire need incentive to want to work for them.

And they should want to hire people who are already working - should be asking why aren't they working?

For real, if 55k is similar to what you make now, and the benefits are the same, but the drive is 4x longer, and you don't need to move jobs... Pass. Nope. Not for you. Working g for an MSP sucks imo.

                              "Dear xyz,
Thank you for the offer of 55k. I appreciate your offer but must decline. I am comfortable in my current role; to entice me to leave a comfortable job with a far longer commute I would need a fair increase in wages and benefits. I'd reconsider for 65k and 10% bonus, private healthcare and life insurance, and x days leave per year.

I'd be very excited to work with you but the finances must be financially viable. Sadly, 55k does not meet that requirement for me.

If you can reconsider I'd look forward to agreeing a contract. Otherwise I wish you luck in your search."

                              Boom.

I have been desperate once, but employed. Took a hefty pay cut to get out of a crap situation. Once able to take my time, secured a job with a 20-30% increase on the original pay. Basically, only take a low ball when you need to otherwise make them pay what you are worth.

In the states, can new employers see what you made in previous jobs?

That depends on where you are coming from. But the general answer is no.
