But ill just create a flat network. No VLAN's for now. I read someones post having a hell of a time trying to learn/setup a VLAN.

That is because he had no idea what he was doing and was starting in the middle and refused to use the GUI wizard.

Also, he supposedly had the VLAN setup on the ERL. He was having problem with tagging on the switch and passing traffic. All of those have nothing to do with VLAN directly.

@alex.olynyk It's vendor specific because they all use their own GUI's so the step by step process is going to be different. It can be different for the exact same product too if you don't update the firmware to the most recent update, which I think was part of the reason you were running into issues

Setting up a VLAN on EdgeOS is simple.

That's the most common use of them in the wild 🙂

This made me laugh. The hospital was the only place ive ever worked that actually needed vlans

Would love to hear reasons against running vlans, since we are on that topic. I don't run vlans btw.

Nothing wrong with running a VLAN when it is actually needed.

The point is that almost no SMB needs it.

The reason is that it adds complexity and overhead where none need be added.

                                    http://www.smbitjournal.com/2014/10/one-big-flat-network/

It's about unnecessary complexity. VLANs add complexity with very little benefit in most small scale situations. Most SMBs implement them either out of confusion (they think that they benefit performance) or hurbis (JP Morgan needs them and I'm way more important than a Wall St. bank so obviously I have to have VLANs too!)

I used to do VLANs for broadcast storm reasons.. but as I've sense learned, if you have broadcast storms, you have another problems you need to solve anyway... and the VLANs probably won't save you, the switches will still be swarmed and might be brought to their knees anyhow... so, yeah.. today, if I need more than 250 devices in a network, move from /24 to /23 or even /22.

Migrating an existing network though - kinda a huge pain in the ass.

Definitely true. But to bring this full circle, the person in question wants to setup VLAN for learning how to implement them and how they work, and that is awesome.
