Should I help him out or let him figure it out?...

      Give a man a fish . . . .

fair enough, he said he will just run with windows home for a while and see if he needs the windows 10 pro ..

Do you guys operate in an AD environment? If so, to join that doesn't it require at least Pro to be able to bind.

no, we are not running AD

Not much need for Pro then.

      More like zero

Is so confusing configuring softwared raid + lvm during a debian installation.
Its a lot easier doing that on Fedora/CentOS.

            personal preference?

Personal preference to give your company a windows 10 pro license because once you do that gets applied to that hardware and they can reuse that hardware as much as they want on your license it’s not a personal laptop. Personal preference has no bearing on the situation.

Base Debian or some variant like Ubuntu?

                    to expand on this:
we are using these laptops for at home use for on call and other work related tasks.

So are you free to install whatever you want on it, or do you simply want Windows 10 Pro (or higher) ?

personally I want windows 10 pro or higher.
but we are free to install any version of windows 10 we want.

Im moving my personal laptop to Linux next weekend 😜

And where are you acquiring a license for windows 10 pro?

                    https://i.imgur.com/ACXJJpD.png

Right. You can't use that as you don't have a Windows 7 Pro license. That's for upgrade. Home to Pro is not an upgrade.

The only difference that I can see is that Pro has Hyper-V, where Home doesn't include it.

But that doesn't sound like a support laptop requirement. .

We're just trying to understand the value that A ) You get from spending money on a work tool, that your work doesn't require and B ) How does that justification make sense?

Just trying to save you a lot of money. You seem to have glommed onto something but we are suspecting that you don't know what Windows 10 Pro is or does. You "want it", but don't have any features of it to use. That you are getting frustrated rather than just telling us why you'd want it, suggests your brain knows it doesn't make sense but is frustrated for "wanting" and having made a decision without supporting logic.

Step back and think... why the heck do I feel that there is a reason for this. If you can't tell yourself, it's an illogical emotional response.

fair enough, he said he will just run with windows home for a while and see if he needs the windows 10 pro ..

Do you guys operate in an AD environment? If so, to join that doesn't it require at least Pro to be able to bind.

no, we are not running AD

Not much need for Pro then.

                                      personal preference?

As it has no benefits, it seems, this is a personal preference that you need to REALLY think about. This can be reworded "I have a personal preference to donate money to Microsoft and software to my company."

Literally, that's what that means. Calling something "personal preference" that is obviously crazy is a horrible mental response to have. Yes, it is your money to throw away. But we are literally talking about throwing away money for zero reason. Just so that something you don't own has the letters "Pro" instead of "Home".

Really stop and think about that. People who make $500K a year aren't rich enough for money to be so unimportant as for that to make any sense.

personally I want windows 10 pro or higher.

Why? What does it have for you?

that's all I've ever dealt with/ had on personal and work equipment.?

Obviously it doesn't matter what I want/personal preference though

Not if they are bad for you. If you "just like doing meth", would you expect us to just accept that you like hurting yourself? Um, no, that's not how people that care behave.

fair enough, he said he will just run with windows home for a while and see if he needs the windows 10 pro ..

If this was not a work provided device, then you’re personal preference is just that your personal preference and is perfectly acceptable. I would still question the need, but it’s not like giving it to your company.
