This is all part of why I dislike unRAID. Not only do they offer literally nothing that I can tell of value, but they act like a bunch of normal features are special. They pretend that they are doing something special with KVM and Docker and RAID 4 - all things that you already have in equal or superior form, for free, with an enterprise Linux distro. Install Fedora for free, and you have a simpler, safer, more powerful alternative to unRAID that is only upsides, I think. More power, less effort, less cost, easier to support, easier to get support.

Should be noted that any server running 1709 cannot be added to S2D pools as it stands currently since it's not considered production ready....

      Correct. S2D is gone from non-GA WS2016.

      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/server-1709-relnotes

      Storage Spaces Direct

Storage Spaces Direct is not included in Windows Server, version 1709. If you call Enable-ClusterStorageSpacesDirect or its alias Enable-ClusterS2D, on a server running Windows Server, version 1709, you will receive an error with the message "The requested operation is not supported". It is also not supported to introduce servers running Windows Server, version 1709 into a Windows Server 2016 Storage Spaces Direct deployment.

I like the video; I'm not sure how helpful it is though.

Well, if you already know RAID 0. But lots of people don't, and I want to be complete.

I think it's definitely needed. Anyone who doesn't have any knowledge on the subject but is looking to learn will have a good resource in this.

@dashrender said in HPE SmartArray P420 Memory Overwritten Error:

From Scott's post it seemed to say the data written to the drives that allows rebuilding the array when the RAID is replaced is what is missing. If that data is gone, aren't you hosed? Unless it is backed up somewhere?

It's not the disks that are bad, it's the controller itself. It's ROM is messed up.

With luck the flashed controller will pull the array data back in.

What do you mean? Everything looks good and appears to be going smooth according to all monitoring. No errors or performance issues.

It's been doing a very good job the past couple years. I keep it fairly updated. So if something recent broke something on it, let me know and I'll hold off on updating.

Also because you already use MD. 🙂

You know what, I can even move the two disks to my new workstation and not have to transfer any data.

I think the answer may have been found... 😄

Actually even better, I can break the RAID 1 on my current box and convert it to non-RAID, then move one of the disks to my new workstation and convert it back to RAID 1. If done right, I think I can do it all without any data loss too.

I'd prefer to just move the two disks and not have to transfer any data... but that's just me.

Yeah. I'll need to copy my home directory to the SSD in my current box before doing that though. That might be easier than breaking/re-creating the RAID. I'm not quite ready to "switch" yet. Hmm...

I didn't realize people still bought tower "servers"

There are some tower servers which really quakify as great imho. Noticeably from Dell

Any that I've seen that are any good are convertibles (tower OR rack.)

Ya we have 20 z440s that are racked. But those are higher end workstations.

@scottalanmiller just a question (sw not hw) why veeam rather than say.. altaro. Just curious!

There is no backup software on this device. It is a storage target. One assumes that @scottalanmiller will be using some base OS that lets you setup basically any type of connectivity.

Ok! Got it wrong! Thanks for clarifying

I think I got it working with Ubuntu LTS 16.04.2 currently installing the system will see how it goes, however it does make sense that OS needs to be in-charge of this.
