A really nice thing about XO is you can import and not power on.

So you can remove the NIC and then power on. If it works, you know you're in good shape.

@scottalanmiller I have zero experience with XTB & that's what prompted my initial question.

That's worth something. I'm just wondering what we should be looking for. What's the proposed value. Without knowing that, it's easy to overlook during testing.

So I found a quirk, not sure if it's an actual bug. For incremental backups to work you have to use the NFS syntax (BACKUP_URL="nfs://<server>"). If you mount the share, and then write to the local mount it won't do incremental.

I shared this with my parent company and they did an evaluation, but found that its not really useful for them. Initial feedback was " the application supports files only - no other objects (list items, etc.)"

Anyone checked this already and is this the case?

So circling back to this, I was determined to add an SMB remote backup share. Instead of adding a remote SMB backup share through XO, I just mounted the SMB share through Ubuntu where XO is installed. In this case, I mounted to /Backups. Then setup a "local" remote in XO that points to /Backups. Backups are now running and being stored on a remote computer.

      Awesome.

I assumed we "are" talking about 7.0?

      Yes, it works on XS7.

@DustinB3403 was running into the same issues I was on 6.5.

There is dicsussion that some other process is changing it back, but we have not started to troubleshoot that. (I no longer have any XS6.5 boxes here.)

Am I incorrect in thinking that license wise you could use Veeam Free Endpoint protection to backup bare metal servers?
Does the licensing say desktop OS only?

I don't recall seeing anything about Server or Desktop OSes in the licensing with the Endpoint Recovery Free.

      0_1471959639679_veeam-coverage.png

      OK Servers are specifically allowed
      https://www.veeam.com/endpoint-backup-free.html

      Even servers are free? Wow!

It's a one off type solution. No central management, so I'm not really surprised. I'm guessing the idea here is, if a company isn't going to pay for a paid backup solution, then what is the harm in allowing them to use this free product there.

If/when the company decides managing everything separately, the hope is they will move to the paid product.

I guess it is to keep them from just using Windows Backup.

And I have a feeling the software is crap... that or I'm just doing this wrong..

You might be doing it wrong. The basic/free version is very limited, from what we saw. What are you having issues with?

Oh sorry I'm not trialing that backup software yet.

I'm using the built in tools from the application vendor to try and restore a .BAK into a clean installation.

      Oh, I see.

@coliver I know, I wasn't even included in the conversation at the time when we migrated to O365, and I wasn't included in the conversation when they setup Hyper-V.

Nor was I included when they built this VM, or the other reporting VM on Hyper-V to which 16GB of memory and 2 cores assigned to it...

Do you need the entire backup of the machine? You can mount the image of the backup and restore any files anywhere you want.

Remember that this is backup. So if the backup system fails you have options like...

Taking a new backup from the live systems. Offlining the limping array and taking a full backup of it before attempting a restore Doing a backup/restore rather than an array recovery

All of these things make RAID 6's risks minimal. This isn't the only copy of anything, it's a backup. And it is not subject to availability risks (at least not in the way that live data is) so things that cause availability issues are not significant.

NodeBB I think. It loads the image when you scroll to or past the post that has it in it.

S3 is for "nearline" storage. Things that you are going to access quickly. Glacier is archival storage, things that you can wait a bit to retrieve and will not retrieve often. Glacier is much cheaper to store, but much more expensive to retrieve. So if you are very unlikely to need to retrieve it and don't need it quickly, Glacier is better.

Thanks, I think Glacier It's best option in my case.

Can I make a Mirror Copy in Glaicer ?

I'm not sure. Grab something like CloudBerry and you will get a good feel for options.
