Interesting - hopefully the funds will be used for helpful things and not things like drugs or booze.

As the entire point of the card is that and the function of the card is to make only things like food and shelter available, one would assume that that is not a concern.

            Cards are redeemed

100% of your $25 card is used to buy goods and services. People also meet with case managers and connect to services.

All purchases are from non-profit services so it would be pretty surprising if homeless support non-profits were dealing drugs.

It's a form of currency no matter how you slice it. Someone will abuse it.. but I do like it better than cash, as you have a higher percentage of chance it will be used for good purposes.

In which case, if the concern is that high, just don't give money to the homeless. Consider just giving food directly. No reason not to just hand out food.

Oh come on, @Dashrender can be more tin foil hat than that. Food is a form of currency. They will trade it for booze or drugs..

Hand them enough drugs, and you have handed them a job!

Then they can barter drugs for food, shelter, etc.

                            Exactly! - LOL

I really do like the card idea better than cash.

Now if only my local retailers (grocers) would carry these would I not feel bad about having to decline giving a homeless person money.

Once before though (and not directly to me) a homeless man asked a women for cash, she handed him food and he went on a rampage saying"B**** I asked for money not food! etc"

                              So there's that....

That type of behavior deserves a swift punch to the throat. No reason to restrain yourself from a violence when accosted by a useless crackhead.

I once had a guy on the street ask for money for pot. So I gave him $20. Figured if he was being honest he deserved it.

Interesting idea, but it is going to need to be in a lot more places for it to actually work. Even the homeless are not stationary.
