Yes, the Drobo 5D would be good. You could do 5x 3TB drives for "cheap" and have 9TB usable storage with RAID 6 protection. Small spending, big storage. If you want more, go to 4TB drives and leap to 12TB usable.
The mSATA cache device will be well worth it for speed.

Why would the mini not be an option if you have mac users? you don't want to use a windows or linux file server if everyone is on macs. The Mac Pro is going to be overkill for a file server. You just need some good thunderbolt storage if doing Mac Mini

Not that I recomend the Lacie at all but just saying there are large thunderbolt systems out there. 2TB isn't really large though.

I had the same reaction for a second. But he's not talking about the Mac Mini, he meant the Drobo Mini will be too lean on capacity to use. The Mac Mini he is still agreeing is the right way to go for the file server component.

2TB is near the theoretical limits of the Drobo Mini. 24TB for the 5D. 48TB for the B800i. 56TB for the B1200i with tiering in place. 80TB for the B1200i without tiering.
All assuming RAID 6 for data protection. Any could do RAID 5 but that would not be wise at all.

Keep in mind the RAID PCIE card isn't included but, it's a real raid card if you buy one. for such an expandable device it's not a bad price.

And you can't put a PCIe RAID card into a Mac Mini, so that is pretty limiting. How would the Mini utilize this array?

That's the nice thing about the Drobo devices, they are self contained storage arrays. You just plug them in and treat them like an external drive (because they are.) All of the RAID functions are contained in the Drobo.

The Box has the PCIE Slots. You put it in there. and connect the mac Mini Via thunderbolt. It also means you can add more Nics, etc.
