with Apple you can do family share and choose what you want to share. We all have separate apple id's here but share out movies and music all the time.

I have my account for Apple, my wife has her's, which she shares with the kids. Don't know about setting up accounts for a child under 13 yet..

Ok good, sounds like Apple finally solved this problem.

          What about Google?

I just don't sync and can't see any real benefits of syncing that would make me want to turn it on. I get text messages on my phone, why would I also want them to appear on my iPad and iPod?

The whole family share the same Apple and Google ID.

@Carnival-Boy, you might not care about backing up you contacts, photos, etc that you create on your phone, but many others do. Additionally a lot of people like to have easy quick access to their 'stuff' on whatever device they are using...

I back them up, but not via Apple. eg photos to Flickr, I use Hotmail for my contacts, etc etc.

OK a little digging after posting this thread and I found this article.

I love that I can get everything going to all my devices. Except when I am watching a movie on one of them that sucks.

Same here, there is no automatic sharing between the devices. We do it the opposite way, we share one ID across the devices and just limit what goes between them.

Depends on the level of privacy that you want. Our privacy concerns are around "filling up storage where it is unneeded" not keeping people from seeing something we don't want them to see. But if you want more security, I would not do it our way.

Mine don't go there but do go to my Mac OSX laptop. One of the best features of Mac OSX, IMHO. Absolutely love having text (which I hate) where I don't need another device to see them and can respond via a real keyboard. Lowers the problems of texting to "manageable" for me.

Same here, iCloud is not the best. Flickr for my photos for sure. Everything else to Office 365.

I use Icloud for GroveSocial as we are completely Mac/IOS based over on that side of things. But frankly I don't have a ton to save either.
for Personal I use Icloud for sharing photos from gigs etc. out to @art_of_shred easily etc. But really we use our NAS for what we are keeping.
