You are within your rights to demand that information. Why waste your time and their time? I have done the same thing before several times. Most of the time I find the pay to be way too low if they won't disclose it. They usually prey on someone's desperation in that case. You pretty much know the company sucks. So you might as well find out before you interview if the pay sucks, too.

Do the interview. Ask the questions you are asking here and see what their answers are. Even if they do offer you the job you are under no obligations to take it.

It sounds like you live in bad location for IT. There are many many positions available in my area. I see positions or get calls several times a week.

Most of them aren't this bad. This one is just near Virginia Tech and anything near Virginia Tech is somehow crap it seems.

Are you looking to stay or relocate? I know relocation isn't an easy choice. In 1999 I was in that spot having been told that after theY2K cut over, that our jobs were being sourced to the IBM Center in Colorado... It was fun to get sent to Colorado, but sucked that I was training my replacement.
In 2000 I moved 500 miles West to Kentucky and have only visited family when I can. 'Home' was Richmond, VA, and I have watched the market over the last 15 years...
I have watched a good friend sit idle for years because of the market. He's very skilled - having taught me a few things here and there...
Rural areas such as those around Virginia Tech can be difficult sometimes due to the isolation of the area.
If you wish, I can reach out to a few people in the Richmond area and see if they know of anything.

Stay or relocate doesn't matter to me. I wouldn't be looking in the Richmond area though.
If I move I've been looking in the greenville,sc area but, it takes a long time to find a job there because the job market is competitive (which is good for because they jobs are very high paying). I like small rural area's better.

I don't blame you in the least. Having been in Central Kentucky the last 10 years,.. I find that when I visit Richmond, VA - I'm quickly ready to leave. Traffic is traffic - doesn't matter where you are... Richmond is better than D.C. though. At least some of the road in Richmond are getting better... the i95 / i64 corridor was awful the last time I was there ( Nov 2014)... I'm surprised that i295 has gotten as bad as it has. I won't use 288,.. -
You don't fancy the company and they're dicking you around already. The only reason you'd want to go to a company like that is because the pay was great and you know from your research that that isn't the case. So don't waste any more of your time with them, unless you want some interview practice (never a bad thing).

I'd do it just for practise. Interviews aren't something you do regularly and usually it's for high stakes.
Who knows, maybe you'll get lucky and find that it's a gold mine career move with Swedish massage girls visiting every day.

Seems like I do them regularly I've averaging about 10-15 a month now. I've turned down quite a few job offers for various reasons.

I'd agree with the "no payscale - no interview" idea. They aren't serious if they won't talk basics before going to a full interview.

This is what I refer to as "failing the interview before getting in the room." The company already failed their side of the interview. They will never know that they did, but they did. No different than them reading a resume and binning it without telling the candidate that they took the time to look at the resume.

I've had many more jobs than that! And I interviewed for all of those, I think.

They called me twice today while I was busy and left a message wanting to know when I was available for an interview. Apparently they are either desperate or really want to hire me. Not sure which.

I get interviews for most jobs I apply for. Though not necessarily job offers. Especially with phone interviews if they do those. I'm not very good at phone interviews.

OK, I've just counted. Since I left school in 1990 I've had 18 job interviews, which resulted in 14 job offers, of which I accepted 9. I've applied to loads of jobs that I never got interviews for, though.
I haven't been to a job interview since I got the current job in 2003, so I could really do with some practice.

It's been the same since I've been on an interview (ok a bit longer 2000). My current job was moving from a MSP to this company. The interview was informal and more about salary negotiation.
