Coronavirus: US set to recommend wearing of masks

The White House is expected to advise Americans in coronavirus hotspots to wear cloth masks or scarves in public to help stop the virus spread.
President Donald Trump said such an advisory would not be mandatory. Residents of New York, the epicentre of the US outbreak, have already been urged to cover their faces in public. Top health official Dr Anthony Fauci has said he believed all states should issue stay-at-home orders, as the US death toll passed 6,000. "I don't understand why that's not happening," Dr Fauci told CNN late on Thursday. "If you look at what's going on in this country, I just don't understand why we're not doing that." "You've got to put your foot on the accelerator to bring that number down," he added, referring to infection and death rates.

Coronavirus: Europe's care homes struggle as deaths rise

As nursing and care homes across Europe battle to stop the spread of Covid-19 among the elderly, France has revealed 1,416 residents have succumbed to the virus since the epidemic began.
Alarming cases have emerged in the Spanish capital Madrid, with reports of dozens of deaths in two nursing homes. Residents were taken to hospital in the Italian city of Naples after a care home outbreak claimed several lives. Cases have also been reported in 100 care homes around the Swedish capital. Although authorities in the Stockholm region have not given figures, public broadcaster SVT says more than 400 people have been infected and about 50 have died.

Johnson & Johnson announced a similar thing. They have a likely vaccine candidate going into testing. But instead of producing it in quantity after testing, they are ramping up production it now in case it proves viable.

Large monetary risk, that I am surprised they are able to get done as a publicly traded company.

Coronavirus: Spanish deaths fall for fourth consecutive day

The daily number of coronavirus deaths has fallen in Spain for a fourth consecutive day, boosting hopes the country has passed the outbreak's peak.
Monday's increase of 637 deaths means 13,055 have died in total. The nation has more than 135,000 confirmed cases, the most in Europe, but new infections have been slowing. In Italy, the number of new infections fell by 1,031 to 1,941 on Monday, but the death toll rose to 636 - more than 100 higher than the previous day. Slowing infection rates in a number of European countries are raising hope that strict social distancing measures are curbing the spread of Covid-19 - the disease caused by the virus. On Monday, Austria's chancellor announced plans to start easing some of the restrictions in place because of the pandemic.

That is the worst good news. Like, "hey, fewer people died, but we're still filling more coffins than we can build."

Here we are trying our best to help slow the spread of COVID-19 but then we have things like that happening.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved to intensive care in hospital after his coronavirus symptoms "worsened", Downing Street has said.

A spokesman said he was moved on the advice of his medical team and was receiving "excellent care".

Mr Johnson has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to deputise "where necessary", the spokesman added.

Coronvirus: People of Wuhan allowed to leave after lockdown

The months-long lockdown in the city of Wuhan in China's Hubei province - where the coronavirus pandemic started - has been lifted.
Anyone who has a "green" code on a widely used smartphone health app is now allowed to leave, for the first time since 23 January. Train, road and rail connections have now been re-established. It comes after China reported no deaths on Tuesday, the first time since it began publishing figures. To contain the spread in Wuhan, authorities imposed unprecedented restrictions on travel and ordered the closure of most businesses in the bustling metropolis, which is home to 11 million people.
