Something to keep in mind : The "new" star wars is not made for "us" the original fans. this is to close out the saga, tie up lose ends and pave way for the new saga to begin. . .

You only need to tie it up for "us", the old fans. lol

Im young and apparently can't think straight.. so what do you mean ?

Star Wars was done for the old people. It was wrapped up. Disney "re-opened it" just to spite us. The kids didn't need Star Wars IP used, they didn't like it. The old people didn't need it ruined. Disney seems to have done it out of an abject hatred for the old fan base.

They did it as a money grab, not hatred.

I find it hard to believe it made as much money as something else would have without alienating so many people.

only those who care about the Original Triology want/need/care about things being tied up.

young people don't because they aren't invested in the OT.

Right, exactly. And we had the books anyway.

were you more of a Canon or Legends reader?

Wow - really? I'm surprised you're asking this question - which will lead to an education provided by Scott on how the "new canon" is a lie, and really it's just the alternate universe, and what has been dubbed legends is the real canon.

Yup, it's a different storyline unrelated to Star Wars other than it reuses the same characters, mostly badly, and doesn't have the same quality writing. I find no legitimate way to claim it to be Star Wars. Disney owns the name and can slap it on anything that they want, but it doesn't make something that intrinsically isn't part of the Star Wars universe suddenly part of it.

You can own the rights to Little Women as a name. But you can't write a different story and claim it's actually what the author meant. Jo didn't run a home for boys, she was actually a space pirate.

You really believe a completely new story - non SW IP at all - but still SciFi would have made more money?

I just looked up the top 30+ movies by gross, Star Wars had two or three of the spots - I suppose they could have gotten lucky and done better, though they are much more likely to make more on a known franchise than starting something new...
In the top 10 only three where non sequels. I consider every Marvel movie after Iron Man a sequel, brought about even more so in the last 5+ years by the obvious need to get to the Avengers and End Game.

Wow, I had no idea that basically no one goes to see Terminator any more (yeah I didn't go see either of these movies either).

The same people who loved the originals are also up there in age, so they likely aren't a profitable demographic as say as 12 year old who's maybe only heard their dad talking about it.

Really? have you seen what are called "high end collectables"? midrange items cost $200, expensive items cost north of $1000.

Hell Disney sells $250 light sabers in parks, and the amount you see walking around are almost staggering

IMHO the problem with movie/tv for SciFi and Fantasy is that generically speaking filmmakers do not truly understand what draws people to the genre. There is an assumption that it is graphics, violence, explosions, nostalgic IPs, sex, etc., when it really comes down to the stories that can be told and ideas explored within a universe that fundamentally makes sense. So, they make movies that are Pocahontas in space and wonder why people don't think it is amazing. Unfortunately they have massive marketing budgets so many people go and see the movies or watch the show and so it is a commercial success without actually landing with the real audience. If you want to see how hungry fans of the genre are for this content, look at how quickly the Critical Role animated TV show funded on kickstarter.

I'm not discussing collectibles, I'm just talking about the genre of people that Scott was referring too.

I find it hard to believe it made as much money as something else would have without alienating so many people.

The same people who loved the originals are also up there in age, so they likely aren't a profitable demographic as say as 12 year old who's maybe only heard their dad talking about it.

at what age do you "get up there in age"
                                      just curious.

                                      Ask @Dashrender 😉

                                      I'm 44, I don't consider myself 'getting up there'

                                      Fair enough.

Really? have you seen what are called "high end collectables"? midrange items cost $200, expensive items cost north of $1000.

Hell Disney sells $250 light sabers in parks, and the amount you see walking around are almost staggering

That a few old people buy expensive collectables does not a large market make. But I'm not surprised if it is a big market, just saying that high cost collectables exist for every niche and generally earn very little.

Of course - that said - I was only 1 year old when the movie released... so I'm not a first gen fan.. that would be my 25 year old parents - but even they aren't who the movie was made for - it was made for 15-18 year olds of the time, but star wars today, at least these last three movies, to me, seem more for who those 15-18 yr olds are today... the prequels kept their original audience (ok a many years younger) the 11-16 yr olds of the day....
