The basics of modern AI—how does it work and will it destroy society this year?

Today's AI is technically "weak"—but it's complex and can have a great societal impact.
AI, or artificial intelligence, is huge right now. “Unsolvable” problems are being solved, billions of dollars are being invested, and Microsoft even hired Common to tell you how great its AI is with spoken word poetry. Yikes.

Great, the day I need to go grocery shopping. No bread for me tonight.

Always wondered why people buy bread before a storm, why not canned goods that'll be good in a week even without power?

my theory is pbjs are tasty and dont require heating up. some canned goods have to be heated up.

I was never a boy scout, but I can **** well start a fire to cook with only materials on-hand if I have to. If something really bad happens and we loose power for an extended period, what are those people going to do? (We had a 3 week long power outage here back in 2007.)

New human species found in Philippines

There's a new addition to the family tree: an extinct species of human that's been found in the Philippines.

It's known as Homo luzonensis, after the site of its discovery on the country's largest island Luzon.

But... but... We ALWAYS buy bread before a storm! Milk, not so much, lol.

If you're not flooded in, starting a fire with stuff on hand isn't terrible (Never actually had to do that though). I'd eat uncooked canned foods if it was a choice between starving or eating and I had no fire. But I usually keep some stuff that doesn't require cooking at hand too -- at least a day or two worth. Otherwise, I have to break out the squirrely rifle and go hunting -- and would still need fire, ha ha.

Omar al-Bashir: Sudan military coup topples ruler after protests

After nearly 30 years in power, Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has been ousted and arrested, the defence minister says.
Speaking on state TV, Awad Ibn Ouf said the army had decided to oversee a two-year transitional period followed by elections.
He also said a three-month state of emergency was being put in place.

Illinois bill banning eavesdropping by IoT devices defanged by tech lobby

Lobbyists: Bill would punish even if failure to disclose was "accidental."
On April 10, the Illinois State Senate passed the "Keep Internet Devices Safe Act," a bill that would ban Internet device manufacturers from collecting audio from Internet-connected devices without disclosing it to consumers. But the bill was substantially neutered after a fierce lobbying effort by an industry association backed by Amazon and Google.

A private spacecraft from Israel will attempt a Moon landing Thursday

No private company has ever achieved what SpaceIL is trying to do.
It has been 48 days since the Beresheet spacecraft launched on a Falcon 9 rocket and began a spiraling series of orbits to raise itself toward the Moon. Last week, the 180kg vehicle fired its engines to enter into lunar orbit, and now the time has come for it to attempt a soft landing on the Moon.

Yahoo tries to settle 3-billion-account data breach with $118 million payout

Verizon-owned Yahoo boosted offer after judge rejected first settlement.
Yahoo and plaintiffs, in a case over a data breach affecting three billion user accounts, have agreed to a settlement that would require Yahoo to pay $117.5 million.
