Decent ARM processor and 4GB RAM, 16GB storage.

      Isn't that all Chrome books?
So chromebooks are set up bare minimum?

All in what sense? They don't all come with those specs, no.

I guess, all of the chromebooks i've seen are extremely similar in specs.

Do they? 2GB - 16GB RAM is a pretty wide spread. As wide as you realistically get on any other laptop range.

What would you need 16GB of RAM on a Chromebook for?

What do you need it in anything for? Running apps. Chromebooks are just a computer like any other.

Isnt chromeOS based on Internet use?
That was the impression I got when I looked up ChromeOS at least, Hell, we've proven how wrong I can be able things today LOL

Yes, but it's the same concept on why you can get away with 1GB on a Linux server. For some things.

No, it's not. The reason you can get away with 1GB on a server is because it is a server and doesn't have the overhead of a GUI. Windows without a GUI uses little more than Linux does (more, but little more.)

A Chromebook is a full GUI desktop just like others. It has the same need for RAM consumption as a normal laptop. There is no way around needing RAM for apps, except to not run those apps. And that's what servers do, they don't run those things at all.

          16GB - 512GB of storage.

The range in Chromebooks is actually more, not less, than normal other products. Way larger than macOS' range.

Then I supposed the ones i've seen have all been low end.
4gb ramm is what i usually see .
          anywhere from16gb Storage - 32 gb Storage.

4GB is middle ground. But you can get 32GB at least I think.

Google makes models with big SSDs, Acer makes them with big procs. Here is the specs from one Acer model...

          Chrome OS™
          Intel® Core™ i7-8550U processor Quad-core 1.80 GHz
Intel® UHD Graphics 620 with Shared Memory
          16 GB, DDR4 SDRAM
          64 GB SSD

          I stand corrected.

It's an OS built in an era of assuming that the primary use of computers is to be used online. But so is Windows 10 or Fedora 28. ChromeOS uses words like that in their advertising, and people talk about it that way, but it is just a "filler" statement, it means nothing. As with any OS, it can do many things and while the main use of any OS is to do stuff online, they all are general purpose for many tasks.

Most everything you would do on ChomeOS would be based on the internet through google chrome web browser?
Perfect for browsing the web, college students working on online classes , emails, fourms (much like ML)
                streaming movies/ music.
I couldnt see anyone using ChromeOS for like virtual machines.
I could see it for SSH connections i guess, if you use PuTTy (right? )

Sure, the same could be said with Windows, Linux, or macOS. Almost everything that any one does today is like that. That's just "modern computing" and is not special or unique about ChromeOS.

And yet people do. Likewise, I can't see most laptops being used for VMs, either. It's an expensive, weird place to do that, typically. Put your VMs on a stationary "server" and access them remotely for almost all things. It's not just better for learning, it's cheaper (normally) in the long run.

You are basically just repeating "normal usage patterns" and pointing out that ChromeOS is "tuned" well for them.

Terminus or similar. PuTTY is Windows only.

ChromeOS is actually perfect for people like... @WrCombs

That is, people on a budget who don't need large local computation capability. They are low cost, easy to support. If it wasn't for needing one specifically crap Windows-only application (that we need to look into more), a Chromebook would be way better than the Windows laptop you had considered. Lower cost, better performance. In fact, that $79 unit would be better! I mean that literally.

ChromeOS isn't all that special, it's just a highly locked down version of Linux. It's light and fast. What makes it special is that it can run the widest selection of Linux apps (standard Linux apps, and Android apps), and uses Chrome itself to build the desktop which lowers the total system overhead by not needing two subsystems, one for the desktop rendering and one for the browser - it uses the browser for both.

What does that mean to you?

Most everything you would do on ChomeOS would be based on the internet through google chrome web browser?

Sure, the same could be said with Windows, Linux, or macOS. Almost everything that any one does today is like that. That's just "modern computing" and is not special or unique about ChromeOS.

                                Fair enough.
I didnt think it was all that special because Like you said, You can do that in WIndows linux, macOS.

ChromeOS isn't all that special, it's just a highly locked down version of Linux. It's light and fast. What makes it special is that it can run the widest selection of Linux apps (standard Linux apps, and Android apps), and uses Chrome itself to build the desktop which lowers the total system overhead by not needing two subsystems, one for the desktop rendering and one for the browser - it uses the browser for both.

                                gotcha!
