I have a customer that has two vision tek radeon hd7850 with a ribbon cable attaching them together. One has failed, and we cannot find another one that is new for a reasonable price.

Can you attach two different cards with a ribbon cable? Do they have to be the same in order for them to work?

      Thank you

They need to be the same GPU, but don't have to be from the same manufacturer.

Certainly a modern budget card like a single 1060 would trounce dual 7850s?
though i see those are still quite overpriced.

Not even sure they need to be same gpu, amd had that hybrid xfire thing where you could use the ribbon on different cards, 280/290, and also xfire with the onboard graphics and discrete cards together for a bit.

From what you've said, I gather that they have the 7850's in CrossFire... the AMD version of nVidia's SLi.

So long as you keep to a Radeon card it's fine.

Time to upgrade. An entry level card today will perform better than this is Crossfire, will be easier to maintain, and cost less than the cost of you searching for one of these.

Have video cards become more reasonable these days? I haven't upgraded my card because I didn't want to pay cryptomining surge pricing.

Prices have started to come back down recently. They were just getting back to around OEM recommended pricing a couple weeks ago.

                      Improving, but still horrible.
