      ES540

Not the fastest processor in the world but for a lab they wouldn't be bad.

They're for my home lab. I don't need crankin' horsepower. I'm mostly interested in keeping the rust down and tossing in a new distribution or two. Work doesn't allow much of that. Too much, too little....

The only thing I'd really like to find is the latest ROM / update disks for this series. Just because. I don't think that HPE is keeping up on these any longer.
          It's on my task list

I assume you mean the 5540? That also came out in 2009.

So you are looking at 10 year old hardware. Does it support everything you need? Forget what Hyper-V Server 2016 requires that old hardware does not support.

$500 is not a bad price tag for one with the drives and memory included like that.

The RAM by itself costs more. I checked for parts for these and they're all over E-Bay. So I think I can keep it alive for several years.

I'm really just looking to run XCP-ng. I've been running XS7.x for a while... started on 6.x on the current box. I like it and am comfortable with it.
I think that these will do nicely.

Definitely a decent value for the cost IMO, as I said. Just a couple caveats to be aware of.

That feels a little expansive for am ML150 G6. Definitely edging into "people just throw them out" territory. Usable, but the cost of power and dealing with the noise for something so low power might not be worth it compared to a NUC or something in a lab.

The drives cost $75 each, so that is $450 alone

Oh, true. That's not so bad then.

Can confirm G6 will not work with HyperV from experience; due to exactly what @black3dynamite posted
