Solved What is SodiumSuite ? Is that ready for production use ?
-
Hello all,
I heard of SodiumSuite a lot here in this community. So I have registered, and I found it to be some agent-based monitoring and management tool, so I ran the agent on some test VM, it didn't shown anything on my account on https://sodium.waxquixotic.com after few days I logged in again, I found it pulled the information of Windows system, but cannot do anything like add/remove software, windows updates etc.
So what exactly SodiumSuite is ? is that alternative for Manage Engine's Desktop Central, Comodo One RMM Suite ?
where we can manage (add/remove) software, install patches, remote control etc. ?
I am seeing so many things coming soon on my account, is that ready for production use at all ?
What's the official site ?
Thanks !

Loads of info here in the SodiumSuite group: https://mangolassi.it/category/25/sodiumsuite
And this thread is kind of the running status of features and updates as they happen: https://mangolassi.it/topic/14275/sodium-update/SodiumSuite was presented at MangoCon, but there is no video of that specific talk. SS is a little hard to explain quickly, as it is so complex and ambitious and because there is no direct competitor for it on the market today.
What SS is today is a basic agent-based monitoring suite, with built in help desk, and a few basic features - including a rudimentary internal team chat functionality. There are some super basic patching tools built in today, but they are not really worth using yet.
Where SS is going, is what is interesting. SS is the first of its kind universe IT management state platform. New features come out maybe once a week or so. It's slow going, but the project is a bit immense. Over time, SS will encompass everything that you are used to with traditional RMM tools, and much, much more. Some things like software deployments and managed patching/updates are things that are coming relatively soon. More monitoring comes all of the time (a few new things this morning, for example, and a few yesterday as well.)
Long term, you will be able to use SS for everything from knowing what your environment is doing, tracking changes, producing documentation, automation, process management, approval and workflows, ticketing, communications, customer or end user interaction, system management, initial system builds, security, and more. Eventually, the idea is, that as the IT person you'll never need to log into a desktop or server at all, ever. Sure as an end user you need to do that - how else do you open Word, Excel or Minesweeper? But from an IT perspective, no more logins. Everything, in theory, will be done from a single web interface.
SS is also cross platform, running on most Windows, MacOS, and loads of different Linux OSes already.
Is it production ready? Yes and no. The features that are there today are a bit boring. It's useful, NTG uses it today and we are finding value in it. But it is definitely early. But the data that is there is stable, so there is no reason to avoid rolling it out from a stability or tech standpoint. But will it do enough today for you to justify rolling it out? That depends on what you want to get out of it.
However, if you do roll it out today, you can help to influence the features that matter, find bugs early, and have it deployed so that new features just become available to you over time. It is self maintaining, so you don't need to manage the agents, nor do you have to do anything to get new functionality. Every few days you're system will do a little more than it did before. So what might be a bit boring today, might do just what you need it to do tomorrow and might already be ready for you.

What's the official site ?
Official forum is this one, the SodiumSuite group (it's at the very bottom of the groups list.)
The official website is pretty boring but is...

That's nice. Gonna login once in a while to check out the improvements. Will be waiting for completion of software to use for patching and remote management at our work.

Is there any relation with Salt Stack or with it's code ?

SS uses Salt as part of its automation system currently.

Hey there @openit glad that you are interested in SodiumSuite. The first management feature rolled out today. It's not much but it is a good preview of things to come, I think.
